muskrat Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I am looking for a floating monofilament for use with top water fishing. I know super lines float, but would rather find the best floating monofilament. Anyone had any experience with this??? Quote
Bass XL Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I'm pretty sure all mono lines float. I can't think of any that don't. Quote
skillet Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Don't know if this is any help but you can run a piece of parafin (wax) up the line 3ft or so and it works with any line... As Ever, skillet BTW When I used mono, it floated until it got watersoaked, but even then it didn't hurt the action of topwater lures Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 4, 2008 Super User Posted June 4, 2008 Welcome aboard! I'm pretty sure all mono lines float. I can't think of any that don't. +1 8-) Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 4, 2008 Super User Posted June 4, 2008 Once again preception does not equal reality. Nylon mono in regular or co-polymer sinks. The only thing that keeps it on the surface is surface tension (the same action that keeps water spiders from sinking). I just tested 6 different mono lines in a sink filled with water. When I dropped the lines in, they floated, when I forced them under, they stayed under. Quote
NBR Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 I believe the specific gravity of nylon(mono) is just a bit under 1; the sg of water so it floats. There could be additives used to enhance properties or processing that might increase the sg a bit but I doubt enough to make them sink. Yes, if you drop mono in water it floats and if you submerge it stays submerged. Mono is so close waters sg it tends to stay at the depth you put it. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 4, 2008 Super User Posted June 4, 2008 NBR, I didn't find a neutral buoyancy to the evident in my test, all of the lines went to the bottom after being forced just under the surface. Their fall rate was slower than fluorocarbon line though. Quote
muskrat Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 Thanks for all you excellent remarks, but does anyone know if a certain mono floats better than others. I found trilene XL floats better than others. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 4, 2008 Super User Posted June 4, 2008 muskrat, It really doesn't matter. Quote
