My son got bit last month by a brown recluse and he ended up in the emergency room.

His ankle swelled and he had a very nasty red rash.

The doctor put him on strong medication and the bite finally went away after thirty (30) days.

A spider bite is nothing to fool around with so get to a doctor if you have get a red rash.  :-X

What you're seeing is the aftermath of a Brown Recluse bite I received 5 years ago on the side of my right calf.  That scab in the middle has been there the whole time, it covers a hole that goes into my leg.  The area around it is scar tissue from the flesh that got eaten up by the venom.  It was almost twice as large right after the bite.

I never even knew I'd been bitten.  Got what looked a pimple.  It got bigger with the classic red ring around it.  My calf swelled to about twice normal size and I could barely walk into the doctors office.  They lanced and drained the thing immediately.

Dead flesh and the nastiest smell you've ever smelled.  I now know what a dead body smells like (there's no other smell like it).  The area continued to experience tissue loss as the spiders toxins remained.  The flesh eating component is pretty amazing and scary at the same time.

Finally it stopped.  It slowly healed (about a year total).  I'm very, very cautious when I work around the house now.  I've probably spotted at least a dozen more of the buggers since.

Living in Georgia, I've got to see some of the most venomous/fascinating spiders. I've been bit quite a few times playing paintball in the woods by Wolf Spiders. There the ones that get massive and look real similar to Tarantulas. They hang out in thick brush and trees. I got bit alot, and each time, it would swell up, get a small pimple like blister over each bite mark, and when I would press on it, it would feel like my bone was breaking. No fun.

My best friends dad used to work as a landscaper, and he has been bit by the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow.

I haven't seen a ton of Brown Recluse, because they are a bit more difficult to identify because they look like a common spider, but I have seen a TON of Black Widows. My mom whipped my tail more than once because I came home with one trapped in a cup.

I can find them now whenever I feel like it. They live in pretty obvious places. They are absolutely gorgeous spiders and there webs look so cool. They are the perfect killing machine.

Sorry to hear you got bit Mike. It's a cool story though!

Spider bites can get really messy when they are lanced. If gauze is not enough, a sanitary napkin might be neccesary.

My dad didn't get bit but something a bit different.....he had a spider lay eggs under the skin.  By the time he went to the doctors, they lanced it and then dealt  with the thousands of baby spiders all over the office.  Wish I was there but I wasn't.  Dad doesn't like spiders much anymore, lol.

Tin, How's it healing?  If anyone at work gives you a hard time, remind them that matt, the sup that runs the primary, was just out for a week with a spider bite from camping.  ;)

Still really hurting, I woke up in the middle of the night last night because of the pain. I don't know if I'm still hurting from the bite, infection, or where they cut me open (such a awkward spot lol). Still nasty though, have to go back next week. I need to get better for the NEPVA.
