Pretty discouraging when you see the garbage man picking up the recycle bin and throwing it in with the regular trash. After I saw that I have not even bothered since. Quote
Branuss04 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Used to when I lived with my parents, but the city that I live in now sorts and recycle's our stuff for us, cheaper rates than any city around us. Quote
Fisher of Men Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Even though I know I should, I find it hard to do. :-[ We just moved from a city that started charging us an extra $5 a month on our water bill for each of us to have a recycle bin (cans, plastics, newspapers, glass). We were supposed to put this thing on the curb on Wednesdays and let them pick it up. Trash pickups were on Tuesday and Friday. My problem with it was that the trash service wasa going to make money off of my recyclables. Why would I put my aluminum cans in there when I can take them and sell for 80 cents a pound? I guess I'm kind of selfish on the matter, but isn't that realistic? Even though I know that it takes about 90% more energy to make a new aluminum can than a recycled one. Does anyone else feel this way too? The smaller community we now live in doesn't offer recycling services. If I am to recycle anything, I will have to drive at least 15 miles in either direction to deposit these items. That's around $8 of my hard-earned money (round trip) to recycle. If I'm being irrational about this, someone please set me straight. I'm just being honest about this. Here's my take on what we need to do: If our gov't (EPA I guess) wants us to recycle, then they need to offer more incentives. How about offering a tax break to those of us who recycle "X" amount of products per year? (Maybe have recycling centers give us reciepts or something) I really think that the average citizen might actually lift a hand if they see something more immediate in it for them. Just my .02 as always. -Fisher Jimzee, Did you try reporting that to your city officials? Quote

Why not just take the recycling in when you or your wife are out running errands? As for the recycling company making money on it in your old community, why does that bother you? You're just throwing it away so why shouldn't someone else take advantage of you tossing it? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 24, 2008 Super User Posted September 24, 2008 Mandatory recycling is a terrible waste of time and money. Quote
CRFisher Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 No, although my wife does. I get yelled at all the time for throwing something in the trash. Honestly, I think with all the time and money spent on recycling we'd be better off putting that effort elsewhere else. Now they also have all the rules too on what can/can't be thrown out so it's leading people just to dump the stuff on the side of the road or in the river. 18 different trucks picking stuff up at different times of the year. Lawmakers have done a poor job making this work. The fact that they all go in a bin (instead of some type of sealed container) makes it a pain because everything has to be washed out or it will stink, which wastes water. I think you could just hire some people (or invent a machine) to sort through this crap when you empty a trash truck for 1/10th the cost and 1/100th of the effort and get the same result. Quote

Super User grimlin Posted September 24, 2008 Super User Posted September 24, 2008 I get .10 cents a can, plastic bottle and glass bottles. It adds up fast! I got 3 garbage bags full right now...that's about $10-$12 right now. Quote

My job is right across the street from my home and we do business in the town in the other direction. I don't have a problem with someone else making money with my trash. Just don't charge me money to do it! > Quote
