I was forced to learn to drive a standard due to my new job and boy was i missing out! My buddy has a little 4 cylinder Pontiac that he taught me on today. I knew the motions in my head and was confident, just needed to test my skills. I actually did very well considering i have never even drove one before. The first few times it was like second nature then it started getting rough. I would either peel out or stall out. Apparently somebody didn't like the fact that we were in a closed parking lot away from traffic practicing so they decided to call the Police.

The cop was kind of a hee haw at first and then once he figured out we weren't just doing donuts he eased up and actually gave me some advice. I now want a standard transmission vehicle  8-). Man that was fun!

Not really an option where I drive, too much traffic, it would be a pain. I wish I knew how though, I feel like everyone should know.

All I drove from 93-03.  Sometimes I miss it.  Then I drive one.

X2  Had one for 10 years.  Glad to get rid of it.  Then had one given to me.  Can't turn down free.  Really tired of it.  Can't wait until I can get another car.  Enjoy it while you're young and while it's "fun"

I can't wait to get rid of mine. Maybe it would be different if I had a sports car, but I have been driving a pickup with a stick since '96. Between '97 - '03 I had to drive from south of Atlanta airport to north of Atlanta during peak driving times twice a day  >:(

The only pros I see in a manual transmission are better gas mileage, which is marginal, and less expensive and easier to change the transmission.

My '57 Chevy and my Vette had "stick shift". It's fun until you get caught in stop-and-go traffic.

Fun until you get in heavy traffic.

Traffic, mud holes, hills-its all fun with a standard.

Wife can drive one, I drive one-my 10 year old can drive it in the field ;)

I truely think all teenagers should start out on standards, then graduate to auto's if they want. They'll never forget it ;)

I just drove a stick for the first time a few weeks ago.  My g/f drives one like a champ, so she was teaching me in her jeep.  It was so dam frustrating at first, but I got the hang of it.  I think I put like 40k on that transmission in the 1st hour of driving it  ;D

Personally, I think you should have to take your driving test in a stick, just so you know how to drive one.  I have been driving a stick since I was 9 yrs. old on the farm truck and tractor.  It actually feels weird to drive an automatic sometimes.  There is just not enough pedals....

I abhor automatics.  Never in the right gear, shift when you don't want it to.  I have put over 100k on my manual truck and never had any issues.  Automatics are wear items.

Not dismissing anyones' fun with a stick, but drive big city downtown traffic with a big truck on a daily basis.  After awhile you feel like you could move the earth with your left leg. ;D

Nowadays I like my automatic

I drive a stick and most of the vehicles I have owned have been a stick because stick shift vehicles usually sell for less. I prefer a automatic but if I can save a couple Gs by buying a stick I will.

Thats what it is.  I have driven 100s of vehicles, both auto and manual, in all kinds of conditions.  I will always prefer a manual.  I know the pros and cons of both.  However, some peoples pros for an auto are not mine.

UPDATE!

I ran off the Dyno track and into a very expensive fan and headlight tester at work today driving a standard 92 Chevy. My tech told me that I would be fine on the Dyno since its basically a treadmill for cars......Boy was he wrong. I popped the clutch on accident and at about 4500 rpms and SKKKRRRRR!!!!!!!! Straight into the giant fan and headlight testing machine. Luckily nobody got mad, it was actually quite funny until I had to take apart and fix everything I had just ran into. Luckily I hit the brake quick enough or I would be fixing a wall.

He took me out of the bay with it and showed me what I thought i already knew. I can honestly say that I now know how to drive one correctly  :-[.
