done Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 One of the threads on facebook made me wonder, besides BassResource, are there any social networking sites you guys and gals use frequently? I would be curious to see what you use and ball park ages (teens, 20's, 30's, etc) I am mid 30's and on facebook and LinkedIn. facebook for social aspects and LinkedIn for professional. Quote

Daniel My Brother Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 My 18 year old daughter calls Bass Resource "Facebook for old men" ;D Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 3, 2008 Super User Posted September 3, 2008 My kids ask me why Bass Resource doesn't have any games to play. I tell them that this is "educational web surfing". Quote
done Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 Of those of you who do not use anything, how many of you live in the area you grew up in? facebook for me is a good way I keep up with the folks in NY I grew up with. LinkedIn is really a professional networking site. I would say, of the time I have online that does not involve work, this site is the one I spend more time on. Quote
Big Tom Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I use facebook very rarely and I am on myspace a couple of times a week. I am 24 and in college so these are awesome ways to keep in touch with all those old buddies I would have otherwise forgot ago. This is the address to my myspace: www.myspace.com/superawesometommy The is the address to the band I started a month ago: www.myspace.com/thehylineband Quote
Fisher of Men Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 None. I'm like Muddy. I socialize with LIVE people in person. As far as keeping up with others where I grew up, I really don't care too. That may change as I attend my 20 year reunion in a couple of weeks. Quote
guitarkid Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I have one, but I talk to my friends back in Va -tumnus Quote
bassdocktor Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Facebook and Myspace seem to be the most popular around school. Seems more and more people are drifting away from myspace because they finally realized it wasn't worth the hour a day they spent updating. Until they got rid of it as a main feature facebook was very good for finding people in your classes. Would help you if you ever had questions about labs or upcoming tests. But, I think people were using it for stalking so no more class finder tool. It's also a good way to find out when friends are coming home from school. That way you don't have to keep playing phone tag because you are both in class. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted September 3, 2008 Super User Posted September 3, 2008 Keeping up with friends: Phone calls, emails and the old fashioned " Hey I haven't seen you in a while lets grab a bite to eat" Trying to Hook Up: Since I have to monitor the internet usage of the minors in our dorms it seems top me that at least 80% of My Space and Face Book is all about getting jiggy with someone Quote
bassdocktor Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Hey Muddy you're right you can still call someone or send them an email but when you spend time on a college campus you'll see people checking their facebook like every 2 mins or just spending every class on it. Odds are it's quicker than an email. Plus much like here you can always send them a PM. Like I said before it keeps phones from going off in class which is always a good thing. Sure you see people trying to hook up but most girls I talk to find it kinda creepy especially when they don't know the guy. Usually not the other way around though. Go figure? Quote
daviscw Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 I have facebook! Add me! My link is my website, or search for Cody Wayne Davis. Quote

=Matt 5.0= Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 I'm on Myspace and Facebook. Old friends are coming out of the woodwork. The love of my life when I was a lad just contacted me after 14 years. I just told the wife..... Quote
IMPY03 Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Yeaaah I do the myspace thing...its what happends when I can't get to the fishing holes 8-) Quote
done Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 I also have an ulterior motive as well. Muddy sort of hit on it with "Since I have to monitor the internet usage of the minors in our dorms ". Having 4 kids, I am big on staying up to date on the tech out there. I work in the IT field so that helps. I also try to help teach non-IT parents out there some of this stuff so they can monitor their kids internet usage and in particular they can help be protected from their own ignorance. My brother was surprised when I showed him his kids MySpace pages. It was a complete shock to him. I took him aside and tore him up a bit on how he pretty much ignored that entire side of his kids. It came down to he didn't understand it so he never looked in there. On that note, I also took issue with many of the internet logging and monitoring software out there. There are too many postings on how to beat the popular ones. People don't give kids enough credit. So I have been writing my own software to manage it. I guarantee my kids will not see that coming. LOL. To be clear, i also prefer the good old fashioned method of talking to people or hanging out. I have friends I communicate with from NY to FL, to IL, and some in CA. While I do try to call them as often as I can, and occasionally visit, facebook allows me another avenue to keep in touch. LinkedIn is great for professional networking which is what I use it for. Then you have BR which helps me out with the REALLY important stuff! Quote

I swear every time I went down there, the same teen girl was checking her facebook page! > Get a life! Quote
