He's 3 for 3 so far, and the "experts" say that his toughest two events are out of the way?  There's no doubt he's good great, but will his body be able to take the punishment of swimming so many races?

i still can't beleive that last lap on the relay race with france... amazing

Yes, the swimming has been exciting. My whole family was up and yelling on that last lap. Great fun cheering for our country!

As far as the topic, yes, I think he can do it. Of course there's always the chance that he may make a mistake, but his routine seems pretty tight.  Eat, sleep, swim. I wish I could eat all those calories and not break 200 lbs!! Then again, I'm sure all those laps in the pool would cut into my work time. :(

Just watched him swim the butterfly.  Another win, another world record.   The guy is amazing.

He has this in the bag and I'm rooting for him all the way. He set this goal in 2004, and he has kept his eye on it all this time and busted his butt to get where he is today. There is no doubt in my mind he is the greatest swimmer in the world. I think it was amazing on the 4 man relay the lead that they had. Not only did Phelps gain a huge 3 lengths lead, but the other USA swimmers kept gaining that lead, so not only did we smash the world record by 5 seconds, but we completely embarased the other teams!

GO USA! GO PHELPS!

Agreed... i think he can go 8 for 8.

Eventually someone someday will trump his accomplishments though, its just a given. However, he is an amazing swimmer... just hopes he doesn't cramp up from swimming so many races!

I think he has the speed ans talent to win the 8 golds but I think that swiming that many races is gonning to have a bad effect on him Im calling 7 golds and one bronze.

Phelps is an athlete.  He WILL find a way to win 8 golds and set 8 wr's.

He didn't train as hard as he did the last 4 years to duck out on the last race.  He can see the finish and there ain't nobody that's gonna stop that train

X2!!!

I totally agree, Phelps will do it. I have no doubt he will do it. He knows he has it. Look at him after each race, he isn't even winded, no heavy breathing, nothing, heck, he barely cracks a smile. He knows he is the best, I just can't wait until that last race when he is 8 for 8. I'm sure there will be a heck of a smile, and maybe even some tears. I saw Mark Spitz (previous greatest olympian in history, also a swimmer) had an interview this morning and he is rooting on phelps. He said that his record has been standing tall for 36 years, and finally he knows it's gonna fall and he is dang proud for it to fall to another American!

Unless something weird happens, like:

His swimming goggles were made in China and he gets ill form lead poisoning,

or...

A train falls half way off a suspension bridge and Phelps has to fly to the scene to save the passengers...

He WILL win 8.  Maybe we should put him on our gymnastics team too.

IF Michael wins the 100 meter fly, then 8 Golds should fit around his neck nicely. I still remember watching Spitz win the 7 gold medals and the announcer saying "..and he may well be the LAST person to ever do it!" (and I remember the picture of Spitz standing with all 7 medals hanging around his neck. SURE would like to see Michael beat that record!!!

I just say in an article on Phelps that on the 200 Meter Fly that as soon as he hit the water his goggles filled up with water, and since the chlorine level in the pool is so high, he had so close his eyes, so he swam the race blind.... Yeah..... Thank God he is on our side. haha.

It seems like he cannot lose.  Maybe we should send him to Iraq ;D

The most awesome finish I've ever seen.  He sure got a fire lit under him towards the end.  Didn't think it was gonna happen.  Was like watching a close one at home plate.  Watched the replay several times, and still in wonder.   8-)WOW 8-)
