Bassboy15 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Found this spider in my bath this evening, i set a plastic baggie in front of it and scared it from behind and it ran right in. What kind is it? Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted August 11, 2008 Super User Posted August 11, 2008 IF that is a fiddleback (we call brown recluses "fiddlebacks" around here) they are not very aggressive, but they can have a nasty bite. It's usually not fatal, but it causes cells around the area to die. (I can't remember what that's called right now) Quote
Bassboy15 Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 Thanks Hookem, we should probably get this taken care of... Quote
bassdocktor Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Hook I believe the word you are looking for is necrosis. As in the bite leaves you with necrotic tissue. Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted August 11, 2008 Super User Posted August 11, 2008 I work around a lot of boxes, which seems to be a favorite hideout of fiddlebacks. Like I said, the spider is shy. I probably see 50 of them a day. I've only been bit once. Quote
Super User Micro Posted August 12, 2008 Super User Posted August 12, 2008 Brown Recluses are the most venomous of North American spiders. Serious envenomations can leave you permanently injured. The venom kills tissue. It can also "poison" the bite site so that even once the bite has stabilized, a skin graft won't take. Bites can range from little pimple looking bites that won't heal, to serious tissue loss. Secondary infections are a worry since the bite venom destroys blood cells that fight infection. There is no antivenin - no antidote. Those spiders like closets and shoes. Quote

Troutfisher Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 It was a Spider Crank... ;D That would make an excellent advertisement. Quote
Aaron Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Those can get pretty nasty. My Industrial Hygiene teacher showed us some pictures of a bite and how it progressed over time. It started as a small bump then in a week or two the guys whole hand looked like it would fall off. I think they like any dark place, good thing they aren't very aggressive. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 There are a ton of websites about the Brown Recluse, and two things tend to jump out... First is many spiders are assumed to be Brown Recluses when they actually are something else - usually harmless... That pic is not good enough to tell. Secondly, only 1% of Brown Recluse bites actually turn into anything greater than a mosquito bite... and usually old folks or people with bad immune systems get the rotten wound that everyone is so afraid of... moby bass Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Personally when I come across a spider, any spider, it ceases to exist. ;D Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted August 13, 2008 Super User Posted August 13, 2008 doesnt quite look like a brown recluse to me. but my 9th grade engineering teacher got bit by one on his thumb about 3/4 the way through the school year. he got big while he was in his bed, and boy his hand swelled up sooooooo big it looked like someone stuffed a tennis ball under the skin in his hand. half of his hand was black too. it was very nasty. he said it was the worst pain he has felt. i always thought that Black Widows were the most venomous spider in North America? i know there are quite a few fatalities from black widows.
