Super User Sam Posted August 7, 2008 Super User Posted August 7, 2008 Retiring can be a traumatic experience. Brett just could not handle it. So back he comes, after all of the fanfare and goodbyes he received along with the acolades. How often have we seen that story? I hope he does well. Â He has already cost one QB his career in New York and it will be interesting to see how long he stays with the Jets. Maybe he will lead the Jets to the Promise Land like Broadway Joe did about 100 years ago. Â Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 7, 2008 Super User Posted August 7, 2008 The Green Bay Packers are the losers. Brett changed his mind, so why not welcome him back with open arms? He should be playing for Green Bay until there is a real reason to move on. Offending some nobody quarterback is not a good argument for losing a NFL Superstar. As a team, the Packers suck. Farve was the only reason they made it so far last year. I doubt they play .500 ball this year. Management and coaches better start thinking about a new job in another city. 8-) Quote
Newman12Fan Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 At the end of the year, it will be the Packers. Â If they go 11-5 this year, that will be worse then last year. Â If the Jet's go 5-11, that will be a better year then they had last year. Â It will be much harder for the Packers to declare it a successful year then it will be for Brett to make the same claim Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted August 7, 2008 Super User Posted August 7, 2008 Hot off the press:   Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- D'Wayne Williams, a store manager at Modell's Sporting Goods near Grand Central Station in Manhattan, was among the first to feel the effect of the city's latest fashion fad: Brett Favre's New York Jets jersey.   More than 30 grown men, dressed for business in suits and ties, entered his store shortly after it opened at 8 a.m. with one question: ''You got Favre yet?'' Williams said.   Favre, the most prolific passer in National Football League history and a three-time Most Valuable Player, was traded to the Jets last night from the Green Bay Packers. The acquisition led to the league setting a record for Internet jersey orders overnight.   ''Everyone came in very excited,'' Williams, 40, said in a telephone interview. ''You can tell this is going to be a very big seller for us.'' His Modell's doesn't have the jerseys yet, but he said he's taking orders today.   Favre's No. 4 shirt already is the NFL's all-time best seller and current No. 1, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy. NFLshop.com so far has taken 1,250 orders for the jerseys, which cost $80 each, a one-day sales record. Revenue from licensed merchandise sales is split among the NFL's 32 teams, with a portion going to the player.   Traffic to the Jets' Web site increased 2,000 percent this morning to 100,000 page views per hour through 11 a.m., said Matt Higgins, Jets executive vice president for business operations.             Sponsorships, PSLs   In the 12 hours after the trade, the franchise sold more Favre jerseys than for the entire team since Jan. 1, Higgins said, declining to provide a number. Favre might make it easier to sell sponsorships as well.   ''Sponsors look to sports to tap into the enormous passion fans have for their teams,'' Higgins said. ''Favre intensifies that passion. That's not why you make an acquisition, but it has the effect of increasing value to both your fans and your sponsors.''   While the Jets' trade for the 38-year-old Favre might prove to be a good football move, it was pure genius from a business standpoint, said Steve Rosner, co-founder of sports marketing firm 16W in Rutherford, New Jersey.   The Jets are just weeks away from announcing prices for personal seat licenses, which give a fan the right to buy tickets to the same seat indefinitely, in the $1.2 billion stadium they will share with the New York Giants beginning next season. The team has never before required the purchase of PSLs, as the licenses are called.   The Giants also are selling PSLs for the first time and are charging between $5,000 and $20,000. After buying them, fans still must pay for their tickets. Rosner said Favre might ease the anger longtime Jets supporters may feel when prices are announced.              Popularity   While the Jets don't have a problem with attendance -- they have a 10,500-person waiting list for season tickets -- they historically trail the Giants in popularity in the New York market. That's more pronounced this season, after the Giants scored a last-minute touchdown to upset the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. The Jets were 4-12 last season and haven't won the title in almost 40 years.   ''When you go into a new building you want your fans to have excitement; a reason to be there,'' Rosner said. ''Favre brings automatic excitement to a franchise that hasn't had this kind of spotlight in decades. From licensing to sponsorship sales to season tickets, this helps them in all areas.''             Television Networks   Television networks may become a ''silent winner,'' Rosner said.   ''Yesterday, the Jets probably wouldn't have gotten great ratings for a national game,'' Rosner said. ''With Brett now playing in the nation's biggest TV market, I'm pretty confident the ratings are going to increase exponentially.''   Favre's trade to the Jets ended a monthlong standoff with the Packers. He retired five months ago, and the team named Aaron Rodgers the starting quarterback. Favre changed his mind, and the Packers would only promise him a chance at winning his job back. They completed the trade last night for an undisclosed draft pick after Packers management and the quarterback said parting ways would benefit both sides.   Favre, who will make $12 million this season, is leaving a Packers team that was within a victory of reaching the Super Bowl last season. The Jets have three playoff wins in the past 20 years and won their only Super Bowl title in 1968, when quarterback Joe Namath led them to an upset win over the Baltimore Colts.   Part of Favre's popularity may be in his everyman image, the NFL's McCarthy said.   ''He's more likely to show up at a high school football game than a paid appearance at the Waldorf,'' he said. Uncle Leo Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 This is really a double edged sword. On one hand you can not blame Brett for wanting to play, he probabaly retired too soon, I believe he may have a few good years left if the line protects him. He made the Packer the Packers. On the other hand you can not blame GB, over the last three years or so Brett has help them up on retiring and has hindered their planning going into a new season. I guess this has gotten old. Either way being a Bears fan maybe we have a chance this year, to bad we did not pick up Brett. Quote
SuskyDude Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I think they're both losers, but I feel Brett is the bigger heel. You said you retired, so retire. Thats it. He does this flip flop attention dance enery year and its OLD. Very OLD. I don't care what Brett says the org. "forced him to do" or whatever. This kind of drama is best suited for women and soap operas. You retire, the org has to move on. And even if he hadn't retired, why would they start him again? He might be great, but he hasn't won them the big one in awhile. Getting close doesn't cut it. He could have retired a legend. For some reason, now that he's a Jet, I see him going out like a clown. Â ;D I wish him the best of luck, cause he's gonna need it over there. Can't wait till the season starts! Quote

Super User Grey Wolf Posted August 7, 2008 Author Super User Posted August 7, 2008 Sorry Muddy , I did forget the most important one. Quote
IMPY03 Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I voted brett because I have a feeling that after this season with NY he will either have a career ending injury (madden curse lol) or he will be an average QB just like the past 3 seasons he played with GB besides this past season and will want to retire again and then probably try and come back out of retirement yet again to move to another team...I think its rediculous that pro players like brett even have the chance to come back out of retirement. I think after they officially retire they should be done for and cannot come back. Its really annoying to me personally because every time I turn the friggen channel to sports center all you hear about is brett farve this brett farve that!! Quote

SuskyDude Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Well, as a Broncos fan, I still wish John Elway would come back! 8-) Why wouldn't you? Unlike Brett, John was getting it done, and went out on top. Oh, and I have to ask, why do you root for Denver? I thought Tennessee had a little football team? Â ;D Â 8-) Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 8, 2008 Super User Posted August 8, 2008 I lived in Denver for 17 years. The Broncos are my favorite, but I am, and have been for decades, a Cowboys, Chiefs and Green Bay Fan. During the McMahon & Singletary era I liked the bears. When San Francisco wasn't beating up my Broncos, the 49ers, Joe Montanna, Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice were some others I admired. Â I guess I'm just a NFL junkie! 8-) Quote
-HAWK- Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Bretts the Biggest loser here, his legacy is flawed permanently. What does he really plan to achieve with the Jets this year? You know they have very little chance of even making it to the playoffs!! Quote
Aaron Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 RW, how are you a Broncos AND Chiefs fan? I am a Raiders fan (don't laugh) and I could never root for one of the division rivals (except under a few circumstances). Quote
IMPY03 Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Jets have a 15 to 1 chance of even making to the super bowl now with brett....Green Bay has a 10 to 1 chance without him! lol ;D Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted August 8, 2008 Super User Posted August 8, 2008 I grew up in Kansas City and was a season ticket holder in the Wolf Pack at the old Municipal Stadium. We won the Super Bowl my senior year in high school! After moving to Denver in 1980 I remained a loyal Chiefs fan until the Broncos acquired John Elway from Baltimore in the '83 NFL draft. I still have a soft spot for the Chiefs from days gone by. 8-) Quote
