fish-fighting-illini Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Speadbead AKA Wayne I got to thinking about it and we may have done the alltime best at agreeing to disagree. We should both be HIGHLY PAID diplomats of foreign dignitaries or something LOL FFI AKA - Matt Crum
wagn Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I will gladly admit that I am one of those people who often do not capitolize "i" when I should. I also make spelling errors on occasion. However, as some food for thought, I work in the investment industry and am often sending quick messages back and forth to co-workers through a message system. In this instance speed is more important then grammer. The use of shorthand, bad grammer, and leaving out punctuation is actually a benefit. The faster and shorter that I can type something the better. my mistake habits from instant messenger and forums actually gives me an advantage in this type of work. Who woulda thunk it ;D
RobbyZ5001 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 This whole subject irritates me. I am not even going to pretend that I know the English language in and out so feel free to tear apart my message. I could really care less. People on bassresource come from all parts of the world, society, and have different education levels. Do you honestly expect 15,000 members to know how to type the English language perfectly? When your out in the real world do you insult others around you about how they talk? Get over it mike honestly. I heard your story a couple months ago stating your concerns of how people type on bassresource. You have goals that are unrealistic. We have members ranging from teens to older adults. Some of us are factory works, some in college, and some successful business people.
bass slayer 17 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 idk w/ i would do if i had to text in proper english... should we complain about that also ... as long as i can read or sound out what the person is typing its fine with me...TAKE A CHILL PILL DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel My Brother Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I don't expect perfect, but there are times when a little effort would go a LOOONG way.
Super User Hookemdown. Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 All I ask for is a coherent sentence with a period at the end.
Super User burleytog Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 I don't understand how anyone can expect to be taken seriously if they cannot compose a somewhat legible post.
KYbass1276 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I'm going to be the first to admit it is ignorance on my part. I try to use correct spelling a grammer but, I'm going to be honest it's been so long since high school and not enough time spent writeing I have forgotten alot. It sucks but I do atleast make an effort it just seems to get harder to remember the older I get and I'm not that old even though thats not an excuse.
fish-fighting-illini Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I don't understand how anyone can expect to be taken seriously if they cannot compose a somewhat legible post. Ther is no way that this many people are going to agree on this or any other topic of this complexity for that matter Everyone is going to have a different opinion or logic behind their belief. Everything has been said on this that can be. Lots of gret posts How about we agree to disagree and end this one amicably I might watch for a couple more posts then I done with it I hereby dub myself the Mook of reason ( inside Mook club joke for newbies )
Super User Long Mike Posted July 31, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 31, 2008 All I ask for is a coherent sentence with a period at the end. What Hookemdown said. This subject is not complex. All I am asking for is a little effort on the part of posters to capitalize the first word of a sentence, capitalize the word "I" and to insert a period wherever you think the sentence should end. It would make life much easier on those who are trying to read the posts. In all honesty, I could care less about proper grammar and spelling, although I think they are important. I think most Members would agree with me. Proper grammar and spelling are a direct result of one's formal education. Some of us have not had the opportunity of higher education, and that's fine with me. Those of you who have frequented this board know that I have NEVER publicly criticized a poster for his/her use of the English language and I never will. Re-read the first paragraph.
WIII-60 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 ignorance would be a matter of your perception of what someone should know. Take that basshunter69 guy or whatever his name was. He took a bunch of people here for a ride by acting like he was....let's face it.....some dumb hick who was down on his luck. Nobody jumped his case when his grammar was a train wreck. Everybody just felt sorry for him, but judged him for it in secret. Of the thousands of members here isn't it possible that some of them have english as a second language? Is it unacceptable then? Make your case to an individual as it happens and play the role of "better" under the guise of "wiser." That way, they can explain themselves. Maybe blocking the posts so that you're not subject to it is a less-confrontational-moderator-friendly option. I'm not saying it isn't an example of the sad, sad state of things in the world today that some people truly are just lazy, but it isn't my place to tell someone that they look like a moron. Sometimes people here get a little too big for their britches when they don't have to look people in the eye and say things. We all belong to a greater community on the forum that is much greater than the sum of your part.
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 From King of the Hill: Bobby: "Dad, I failed English." Hank Hill: "You failed English? Bobby, you speak English." Point is 99% of us on here have spoken/written English since we were about 1 year old... I see a lot of people on here making a virtue of or glorifying in their ignorance and/or laziness - It is Sad. I applaud Mike for what he is trying. It is not snobby or elite. We all have a zeal for Bass Fishing, we all go just about 110% when it comes to catching bass, learning about bass related topics, lures, rod length, flexibility, speed, etc etc. Why not put the same effort (or even a fraction of that effort) into forming a cohesive sentence/paragraph so that other people with the same drive to catch the best fish ever can understand you and take you seriously?
Zel Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I hereby dub myself the Mook of reason ( inside Mokk club joke for newbies ) Sorry F-F-I, but the terms Mook and reason put together is an oxymoron.
dave Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 as you can see from the first couple of posts that the ignorant will be ignorant. Your sarcasm detector is obviously broken. You, having been here so long and knowing your post style, is one of the one I did understand as sarcasm. If you are able to re-read the pages and pages on the history of this topic, you will see what was meant.

Grammar school, where we learn to at least capitalize "I" and the beginning of a sentence and end it with a period.

Super User flechero Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 The funny thing here is that several people brought up members who speak English as a second or third language... most of the members whose first language is NOT English, do better than many who only speak English. I'm certainly not a great writer but an effort is made to keep things legible.

While there may have been an instance of "miscommunication or misunderstanding", Raul's posts are informative and grammatically superior to a lot of what you see on here. Like was said earlier and numerous times before...No one is asking anyone to be a college English major. FFI, I dont have computer access at night, so I didnt see your post until this morning. I agree with you about our agreement to disagree. I think that came out correctly. ;D

Hoover Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Let's be clear here. Legibility relates to the quality of the written word in terms of penmanship. Coherency relates to the quality of expression of an idea. To me, grammar and punctuation do not involve whether a post is legible unless your computer screen is dirty. Coherency does involve grammar and punctuation to express an idea. ;D ;D ;D God bless you, Mike. You've been relatively quiet for several months; it's good to have you involved again.

JShrock07 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I agree... I too have been quite lazy about this subject. I usually type as fast as possible to get what I have to say off my mind and onto the computer. Now as for all the correct verbs and what not I'm not very good with things of this sort, so if you catch me writing incorrectly please make me aware. I'm sorry if I have helped make this site so informal. -Nitroman
