xboxfisherman Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I'm looking to purchase a shotgun here in the next few months. It will be used for Dove and Rabbit. Possibly duck and geese. I'm looking to only spend about 3 or 4 hundred bucks. Any hunters out there that can offer suggestions. EDIT: Looking for an autoloader over a pump. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 You can find this used, but in perfect condition in your price range. The Remington 870 is classic: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/ 8-) Quote
Aaron Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Remington 870. I have two Express Super Magnums, one I bought new for somewhere in the $300-$400 range and the other I bought used for $175. I don't know anyone that regrets buying an 870. Quote
JShrock07 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I bought a brand new Mossberg at my local Wal-Mart and so far this gun has performed flawlessly for me. I use it for deer, turkey, dove, rabbit.... etc. It was very inexpensive and well worth the $287.95 I spent. Quote
xboxfisherman Posted July 31, 2008 Author Posted July 31, 2008 Wow, that's great service there. 4 replies in as many minutes. Forgot one point, kinda looking for an autoloader more than a pump. I'll edit the original post too. Thanks again. Quote
JShrock07 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I would say then, the price of your gun will rise alot, for a semi-auto. I like pump personally. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 The 1100: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_1100/ 8-) Quote
Aaron Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I think you will have a hard time finding a quality autoloader in your price range unless you find a good deal on a used gun. Are you looking for 12 ga.? EDIT: Also, I have heard that some autoloaders tend to malfunction in colder weather. I don't know that for sure as I dont own an autoloader but it is just something to keep in mind. Quote
xboxfisherman Posted July 31, 2008 Author Posted July 31, 2008 Yeah probably gonna end up with a pump. Don't hunt that much to justify spending that much on a shotgun. Sure am glad the bait monkey doesn't have a hunting counterpart. Quote
Aaron Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 You are mistaken my friend, once you get the first gun you always want more. Just wait..... Quote
fatmanslim247 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 You can find remington 1100's and 11-48 and 58's used for around 200 to 250. They are nice guns, about the only thing that goes wrong with them is the spring bushing but thats an easy cheap fix. the 870's are nice guns but I never have liked pumps, I started out with a mossberg 500, then bought a winchester 1300? semi-auto, bought an over and under then now i have a 1100. I haven't paid more than 250 bucks for any of the guns I have purchased. Go to local gun shows and look around there are always deals to be found, you just have to find them. Quote

Super User Hookemdown. Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 Benelli SBE2 It's not entry level but is one great gun. Quote
SCBASS Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 If you are set on an autoloader, this is about the cheapest they come for a new one. It is actually a Russian made gun (Baikal) that Remington imports. They are not the most refined guns but are very reliable and will shoot 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" shells. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/SPR_models/SPR453_autoloader.asp Check out this video Quote
Wildbillb Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Benellia Nova pump. I use mine for deer, bear, ducks, turkeys, pheasants. It does it all. Quote

wisturkeyhunter Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Cheap autos are like cheap baitcasters. They suck. Go with an 870. Quote
quant PT Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Cheap autos are like cheap baitcasters. They suck. Go with an 870. x2. Bought my son a Stoeger auto from Dicks for Christmas and I wish I had bought him an 1100 (he wanted the Stoeger - not my idea). Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted August 1, 2008 Super User Posted August 1, 2008 All 3 pumps mentioned are excellent choices. The Remington is tried and true, the Mossberg is also, except that unless they changed it, has a single slide bar. The Benelli Nova doesn't have any more or less functioning problems than others, plus it's smart looking. If you decide to with any of the 3 that are chambered for the 3 1/2" mag, the Mossberg 835 is probably a bit more bulky. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted August 1, 2008 Super User Posted August 1, 2008 Sure am glad the bait monkey doesn't have a hunting counterpart. 15 deer stands 10 guns Boxes and boxes of Camo Two chests of equipment Three Shoulder Mounts Five pair of boots One land lease 15 food plots and a 4 wheeler I would say he does.
