evening and night fishing

Hey guys, I was just wondering what you guys were having luck with during the evening hours and at night. During the week I usually can't make it out to a lake until at least 5:00 p.m. Was fishing watermellon w/ black flake senkos yesterday. Caught 2 LM right away. Then a kid came over fishing live bait. He kept on catching fish and I got no more. Threw out a white and yellow spinner bait and a fat ika but nothing was hitting my lures. Even tried a yellow buzz bait. Is it better to use darker or lighter colors at night? Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S.  When is the prime time for fishing LMB this time of year up in the Northeast?  Morning, afternoon, or night?

As far as the best time to go? Anytime you can! I'm a firm believer that anytime you can get out, it is a good time to be out. You just have to be prepared to change your tactics. In a lot of areas the wind picks up in the afternoon. So you might be able to do a lot of finesse in the morning or evening, but in the windy part of the day you might have to change to a spinnerbait or something that doesn't get pushed around. Just be prepared to change your tactics and know that different times/conditions call for different weapons! 8-) Besides, that is what keeps us learning.

Personally, I am ALWAYS a fan of soft plastics. For me, and my personal lack of talent > , if I can't catch them on plastics, then I believe NOBODY can catch any,....PERIOD. So when I don't have luck with anything fancy or popular, I go back to my tried and true love...a zoom finesse worm in watermelon or pumpkin seed fished nice and slow.

As for the kid catching 'em on live bait,..that's hard to say. In my experience, with bass I've never been outfished by live baits. If there were bass to catch then we can get them on artificials just as quick (or better) than live baits. Other species is a different story entirely.

Oh, as far as colors...I've read around here dark colors are good to use in dark conditions.  My general rule is to try and avoid fisherman catching colors and stick to basic colors.  Either the aforementioned pumpkinseed/watermelon (dark green and light brown), or dark blue/black or white/chartreuse.  Other than that I occasionally try a color that is really contrasting, like red/white, but I tend to stick to the basic dull natural colors.

Evening around where I am starts a pretty good topwater bite.  I like buzzbaits and walk the dog baits, and always keep a Cane Toad nearby which can be topwater or subsurface...

I've just started night fishing again up here in New Hampshire the last week or so, and have been having great luck on spinnerbaits. big colorodo blades. I often don't get out to the lake till midnight, so i like to use anything that makes alot of noise. No luck so far this year on buzzbaits

I night fish 7 months out of the year.  I use a lot of jigs, tubes, craws and spinnerbaits.  There is usually a decent bite from dusk to about 2 am.  By then either I am tired or the fish are tired of me.

 Thanks for the advice guys.  Getting some new tackle tomorrow.  Probably gonna go with a black spinnerbait and a black buzzbait based on your recomendations.

 So Wagn,  where are you going fishing at midnight?  You live on a lake or something?  I'm usually up way past midnight and would love to do some fishing late night.  But my friends have more normal schedules and are asleep by 12.  And I would feel weird walking through the woods alone at midnight to fish (from Boston).

Don't leave out the 10" worm and big Jig with a high action soft trailer, these are my mainstays and I fish nights 99% of the time.
