rocknfish9001 Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I just got my first bass boat. A 17.5' procraft with a 150hp yamaha pro v. Now my question is, can my 1991 jeep cherokee pull this? Im pretty sure i could manage, since the I6 motor has 190hp and 225ft lbs of tourque, but here is the kicker, it has 270,000 miles! It runs fine and everything works well, so i might give it a try anyways. Quote
fishbear Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 It should pull the boat ok. Just dont expect it to accelerate like it normally does. Go easy when taking off. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 16, 2008 Super User Posted July 16, 2008 Michigan is relatively flat, correct? If so, you should be able to pull it without any problems. Like Fishbear said, take it easy on the start....with gas prices the way they are, your wallet will thank you. Quote
Zel Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 My Jeeps have pulled my 18.5' Javelin Fish'n'Ski with a 150 Evinrude no problem. But with 270,000 miles you might want to add some sort of treatement (like Restore Engine Restorer or Rislone Engine Treatment, etc) in order to restore some compression & horsepower to that baby. Super User Wayne P. Posted July 16, 2008 Super User Posted July 16, 2008 Pulling is not the problem, STOPPING may be and is a problem with a light vehicle. If the trailer has brakes, have them checked, if not have them added. Additionally make sure the vehicle brakes are in good shape too. Quote
bassdocktor Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 First congratulations especially since this is your first bass boat. Seems everyone missed that part. Good luck with the new boat. Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 My main concern was stopping, actually. The trailer doesn't have brakes. Another concern was that the vehicle has a 5" lift and 32" tires. I forgot to mention that before. And hopefully you all are considering the 270,000 miles with your answers. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Be very careful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Give yourself plenty of room between you and the car in front. You will be fine. There may be some issues with a steeper wet ramp also. Pulling out of the lake on a steeper ramp could be a problem. Just chunck a tow rope in so someone can help you up the ramp if you ever need the help. Quote
Pencil Pusher Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 The lift kit and tires are going to be a problem. You will need to have a custom receiver hitch made that will drop the traile low enough to have the boat and trailer level (or close to it). If your jeep has an automatic transmission, that will be more of a concern than the motor. Quote
J_Zink Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 A 17 year old vehicle with 270k miles on it pulling a boat? I think I would've prioritized and replaced the tow vehicle and scaled back on the boat if money is an issue. The boat can't drive itself to the lake. With a vehicle that old, it's not a matter of if it's going to break down but when. Having breakdowns on the road with the boat isn't any fun and will ruin any trip. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted July 18, 2008 Super User Posted July 18, 2008 I pull a Tracker PT 170 w/ my 1997 Jeep Cherokee, it seriously does not even know it's back there, even on hills. I pulled a freinds Nitro the other day (Z7 w/150 hp merc) and it was a load. Jeeps are great, easy and cheap to fix. My first one had 600,000 miles on it before I quit running it, my current one has 140,000 and "just broke in" LOL Quote
GitRDoneIke23 Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Cool! I have a '87 straight 6 4x4 standard tranny jeep comanche. It's pretty cool! Mine's only got 136,000 miles on it. like ^^^He^^^^ said jeeps are cheap to fix. I'd say drive it till it dies! GIT R DONE!!! -Ike Quote

I forgot to mention that before. And hopefully you all are considering the 270,000 miles with your answers. This has nothing to do with your post, but I'm just curious............Did you get a suspension or body lift, and how much did it cost? Also what size, brand, and type (mudders, all terrains, etc.) tires do you have? And while we're at it..............What kind of exhaust do you have, and what color is it? And do you have a grill guard? Oh, one more thing..............do you have a picture? I LOVE JEEPS :) (and trucks too! ) Quote
TexFishin Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 I tow our 17' F/S with my 96 Cherokee all the time. Does just fine and it has 190,000 miles on it. The 4.0L motor is bulletproof and the AW4 auto transmission in the cherokees is the best transmission ever put in a jeep. So I wouldnt worry about it one bit. Now if you have 32's and didnt regear your axles you might have a little trouble maintaining any speed much over 55 as the jeep power band is low. And as for the previous poster theres no such thing as a body lift for a cherokee as they are unibody construction meaning they dont have a separate frame and body. The body is the frame. Quote
BackofHisSkeeter Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 My Saturn 4 Cyl Vue pulls my 16.5 89 Skeeter with a 70 Merc on it. Quote
