Super User Tin Posted July 15, 2008 Super User Posted July 15, 2008 So as I'm eating dinner I pick up todays paper and begin reading. I usually check out the front page of each section and go from there. Front page just all politcal news, most of which is negative. So I go to the next page which is the Rhode Island section. It includes the story of a brutal rape and beating of a two year old by a her 17 year old babysitter, and a murder trial. The only highlight was a small 2" by 2" article on an Olympic swimmer from Rhode Island. Of course in this section was a total of 6 stories followed by 2 pages of Divorces and Foreclosures. I jump to the next section which is the Business section. In big bold letters, "RI's economy worst in 25 years". How wonderful and uplifting. Next section, West Bay (our county/local section). Nothing negative at all! I read a few stories, open it and BAM! Obituaries. The last section is the sports section and the main story is about the Red Sox first half. Despite the fact that they are in first place, some of the bullets are "Biggest Dissapointments" , "Low Points", ect ect. : Quote
JShrock07 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Just quit reading... HAHA ;D ;D ;D ;D Life is always depressing until your on the water. Then you just relax like there is no problems at all. We all need an escape route. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 In big bold letters, "RI's economy worst in 25 years". How wonderful and uplifting. : Phil Gramm wants you to believe it's all in your head. Stop being such a whiner.... : Let's see...tonight it was either milk for my son, or gas to get to work... Looks like I might be walking tomorrow, just to get there, and then get sent home again because they cut more routes. Pretty sad when the UPS guy has to decide between the bare essentials like groceries, or paying the mortgage. Quote
fishbear Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Matt, You are not the only one in a bind like that, but it will get better, I believe that. We Americans have a way of rebounding from anything thrown at us and making it better than before. Quote
Super User Micro Posted July 16, 2008 Super User Posted July 16, 2008 What's a newspaper? Haven't gotten one in years. They're always a day-late when it comes to news. Quote

But I'm thinking it isn't anytime soon. I have a feeling your going to see people start getting back to the basics, like raising a garden and hunting to get there meat and cutting out alot of things like sateilite and cable and maybe the internet. We have gotten spoiled with all the luxury items we have now like cell phones new cars and yes even dropping $200 dollars on fishing reel. America has been through hard times before we just have to tuff it out and keep trying. Quote
Bill U Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 There are terrible things going on in this world, just do what you can to make it better! "Hey Jude!" Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 16, 2008 Super User Posted July 16, 2008 Tin, happy stuff doesn't sell newspapers. Blood, gore, depressing information sells newspapers. Editors have their own agenda and will push it via their reporters and headlines. It's like the story about the guy who escaped from a mental hosptial and attacked a young lady. The editor did not like the reporter's headline about the story and kept sending the reporter back to redo the headline to make is shorter. So what did the headline finally read? "Nut Bolts and Screws" OK, so it is a joke but you get the idea. Quote
vicdotcom Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Gotta love our media,.. NOT! Media wouldnt report it if people didnt want to watch/read it. It's not their fualt, they just want to provide what people want to see. Look at all the people you get rubbernecking an accident. People like to read about things like murder, rapes, robberies and beatings. There was a paper and a news show on TV once that only reported positive things in the community. Guess what? They both went out of business because not enough peopled cared to read it. The show got cancelled because ratings were bad. Dispite all the surveys saying "ohh id watch a show like that". Vic Quote
