truck acting weird

hey guys just wondering about somthing else now. i changed my truck oil today and i called toyota to ask how many quarts to fill my truck with they said 7. i put 7 in and no sooner then i did that my truck starts actiing up. when i drive the truck as soon as i start slowing down the truck jerks like its downshifting really hard. but sometimes when i put the truck in drive it just sits there instead of rolling forward and then lunges forward. im not sure if you guys have had any problems like this but if anyone might know that would be aewsome thanks....oh and the manual says 6-6.4 quarts for my truck and i put a full 7 could that be a problem? and if it is i sure hope its still covered under warranty.

What kind of motor do you have in it, and not being smart elic but if the manual said 6 then six is what you should have put in it.  You can't always trust the people that work at the dealership.   I would drain it and put in the 6qts and see what happens I bet it runs better because it's over full now

Look for a vacuum line that may have come off during oil change.... Vacuum will do strange things to an engine if it is leaking.

I got news for you. If it is actually doing what you said it is in the transmission. Putting 7 qts. of oil in the engine will not affect it. It could be vaccuum lines to a servo , or a host of other things. something is causing the valve body to either have the shift sequence off or you could have a torque convertor acting up. If it is in drive and not moving it can be the convertor or the bands.

I am not a mechanic, but I was always told that putting too much oil in your motor is worse than not having enough. I was told that if you have too much oil in it you run the risk of blowing out the seals. I am not sure if that is what is causing your truck to jerk around or not, but I would definitely drain it out and put 6 quarts back in it. When all else fails check your dipstick. Good luck.

hey guys thanks for the replies ya i checked the dipstick after i put 4 quarts into the truck and it still read over full. so idk whats going on. and the vacuum lines where might they be located? oh my engine is a 4.7L v8...thanks guys alot.

I'm not that much of a mechanic either, but I have to agree.  Too much oil isn't good.  But that can't hardly be the ploblem with the transmission.  I'm not sure where you would find the vacuum line for the shift mechanism on that motor, but it's gotta be that, or your tranny just picked a rotten time to give you trouble.

I hate to say this brgbassmaster, but are you sure you evan have time for fishing right now?

Ummmm.... is it possible you put the oil in the transmission filler tube by mistake?  Not trying to be a smart alek - it happens.

Also, it's possible the manual is saying 6 qts for the engine, not including the filter, which usually holds about a quart.  That might be why the mechanic said 7qts.

What year is your truck?  The newer it is, the less vacuum lines to worry about.  Nonetheless, they look like small hoses.  Make sure there are no loose ones.  Sqeeze them to see if they flex. and that they all feel the same.  I'm just guessing, but if you put too much oil in the engine, it's possible one of the vacuum lines has oil in it.

If these are not the issue, then start over.  Drain the oil and put in 6 quarts and see what happens.

A question, you said that after putting in 4 quarts of oil that the dipstick showed full, so the question is why did you not stop there and see what the problem was?

Did the truck run ok before the oil change?

I say bite the bullet go see the mechanic and save yourself some major $$$ before something goes wrong.

Yeah sounds like a transmission issue.  The jerking is not being caused by the engine.

On a side note, all trucks are different even when they are the same.  For example, two chevy silveradoes with all the same options, V8 4x4 etc... sometimes can hold different amounts of oil.. This difference usually isnt huge but nonetheless it is worth taking into account.  Put 6 quarts in it, make sure the filter is correct size run the eninge for a min, then shut it down.  Wait another min before checking.  Make sure the truck is as level as you can get it, haha you dont have to break out the level just put it in your flat driveway.  Anyway good luck.

I have seen more than one person get confused and pull the ATS drain plug instead of the oil drain plug.

It sounds like your dipstick was full because you drained your tranny fluid, not your oil, then added 7 quarts onto a full crankcase of oil.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CHECK ATS fluid?

If so do it and if low add immediately and

Then look again and drain the oil (that drain plug is farther forward and more passenger (starboard) side)

***EDIT: I do not mean the caps part to sound like a SA, just checking. Some do some dont, and it can vary by vehicle (some MUST be checked in Neutral, just cost one of our techs a $1900 tranny)All in all if you have the 2 confused, it is very possible you have blown seals or gaskets on the engine, and may have damaged friction ssurfaces in the ATS)

Just checked back in....actually I would check it where it sits, if its like I suspected, I would not move it another foot. Thee next shift may be the last, the next hill the one that over pressurizes the crank case.

A $75 tow bill sure beats a $1500 transmission

hey guys its what you said the oil pan and the tranny pan are the same color and right next to each other so i had the auto hobby shop on base fill it but it still is acting crazy. took it downtown and my tranny is under warranty so w/e they find wrong then it will cost me 50$. oh and i drained the oil the next day.....pretty embarrasing but now i know.

The main thing you have to look for is the color of the fluid you drained. the tranny fluid would have a red tint to it most of the time. You oil is probably going to be really dark brown or black.
