Super User 5bass Posted July 5, 2008 Super User Posted July 5, 2008 After ripping about 150 CD's to Windows Media Player I started to burn some CD's from the playlists, it keeps telling me to load a CD into the drive.....when I already have put a brand new CD-RW in there. I finally got it to go thru the motions (burning) one time and then at the end when it was just about complete, I got a message that said WMP cannot write blah, blah, blah....make sure the CD is not damged or dirty (its brand spankin new)....so nothing was burned onto the disc. Any tips before I take a sledgehammer to the computer? Quote
daviscw Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Buy an ipod. ;D Seriously though, I only use itunes. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 5, 2008 Super User Posted July 5, 2008 For one thing, you want to burn to a CD-R, not a CD-RW. Most CD players will not recognize a CD-RW. Do you have the latest version of WMP? Click Help>About WMP and make sure that you're using version 10. If you're using WMP 10.whatever, that is what your screen should look like. Click on the Edit Playlist icon in the upper left, add the songs, then click on Start Burn. If you have more than two drives (like two DVD/CD drives), perhaps the drive in which you are inserting the disc isn't set for use as a CD drive. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/bridgman_august13.mspx Quote

Super User Dan: Posted July 5, 2008 Super User Posted July 5, 2008 what burley said. Also, you may want to try different disks. I've had certain disks that would not burn even though they were brand new. Like Burley said, make sure they are CD-R. If that doesn't work, it could be your burner drive. Quote
quant PT Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 It is most likely the cd-RW issue. Even if you get it to burn on one, they won't play in most regular CD players. Also, download I-tunes. It is easier to use than Windows media player. Quote
Jake P Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I get the same message when i use CD-RW, use CD-R. Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 because he got the error message that it wasn't able to write the file. There was probably another program that was still accessing the file and wasn't able to burn. Try closing all programs and then trying. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 6, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 6, 2008 I get the same message when i use CD-RW, use CD-R. I tried the CD-R's first and when it prompted me to insert the CD, when I did it, it just kept telling me to Insert a CD......like I had done nothing. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 6, 2008 Super User Posted July 6, 2008 so it didn't work with the CDRs or CDRWs? Sounds like an issue with the drivers or the actual drive. Quote

Hmmm, i wish i could help but i don't know what the problem is then. I remember trying to use CD-RW's and it did the same thing you said, it would get 99% of the burn done and then it would tell me the disc is damaged or dirty and to replace it with a new disc. CD-R solved it for me. I remember WMP use to give me problems like that, i switched to i tunes and haven't had a problem yet. Maybe you should try i tunes..... Quote
EZOP Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Try this, put the disk in upside down. After it fails to burn, put the disk in right and try to burn it again. I had this same problem and for some reason this worked. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 7, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 7, 2008 Well, well, well.....the drive does not work anymore. It doesnt recognize the discs being inserted because it does not work! WOW! Thanks for all the replies fellas....anybody use an external drive? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 7, 2008 Super User Posted July 7, 2008 With internal drives as cheap as they are, I wouldn't even bother with an external drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106072 Install is as easy as 1 - 2 - 3 Quote

Super User Dan: Posted July 7, 2008 Super User Posted July 7, 2008 Burley is right, they aren't that hard to install. It will come with directions and if they don't help, I'm sure you can find additional ones on the internet. Quote

Piece of crap. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 8, 2008 Super User Posted July 8, 2008 Just a matter of determining which drive is the master and which is the slave. Set the jumpers on the rear of the drive in the correct manner and slap it in there. Shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes including reboot and driver install. Quote
