Super User roadwarrior Posted June 24, 2008 Super User Posted June 24, 2008 No, I am NOT beating up Abu Garcia or their STX, but I just hate it when anyone advertises "FREE!" when it's not: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=100536&hvarTarget=search&hvarAID=&cmCat=10004138 > Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I'm torn on this one. I really liked the "Free" tackle bags they offered a while back, even for the $5.95 shipping and handling. But a "Free" $5.95 Tshirt? Not so much. If you really want to give people a free shirt for buying a reel, then include it with the reel. Quote
Olebiker Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Flooger has the same deal. Nice long sleeved T-shirt, though, and well worth the shipping and handling. Quote
Super User flechero Posted June 24, 2008 Super User Posted June 24, 2008 I got a wake up call on a reel I just shipped. A reel box, 12 oz., priority mail $10 :-/ I felt like I lost money on the sale since shipping is so high now. I do see your point but the shirt probably is "free" and shipping probably really is $5-$6. They SHOULD have sent a bunch of the shirts to the retailers with the reels so there wouldn't be a need to ship them separately... if nothing else, it would have been much cheaper. Not much of a sales technique, IMO... who would base a $200 purchase on a tee shirt? Certainly not me! Quote

USPS finally has done the 'zone thing' like UPS and the prices are right in line with UPS for the most part now. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted June 24, 2008 Super User Posted June 24, 2008 They could at least offer a shirt in white or another light color. Who wants a black shirt when it is > 95 degrees ;D I still have not received my $50 rebate and it has been 67 days > Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 24, 2008 Super User Posted June 24, 2008 If it cost $6 to get one for free, the least they could do is have the T-Shirt say Shimano........ ;D ;D ;D Just joking This is sort of like Shimano's free Satelite service, granted they do a fantastic job, but they no longer give free shipping labels with the cleaning coupons and it cost you $10 to get the reel shipped back to you. http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/customer_service0/authorized_warranty.download.-mainParsys-000110-downloadFile.html/Reel%20Repair%20Request%20Form_08.pdf Quote
cpvenom Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Reminds me of that episode of SpongeBob where Mr. Krabs offers free drinks for $3.95 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Not much of a sales technique, IMO... who would base a $200 purchase on a tee shirt? Certainly not me! You would be suprised. With contracted shipping rates I bet if someone pays shipping Abu break even or make a few cents. Quote
jeremyt Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I am waiting for them to say " Get this reel for $5.95 with the purchase of this $200 shirt." Quote

Super User .RM. Posted June 25, 2008 Super User Posted June 25, 2008 It just bad smack talk placement..... They would have done better placing the blue free offer quote down just above the graphic for the cap and shirt.. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Reminds me of that episode of SpongeBob where Mr. Krabs offers free drinks for $3.95 Exactly my point! 8-) Can't say I'm an avid SpongeBob watcher , but that reminds me of a crafty scheme a local bar came up with... They lost their liquor license for selling to underage people, but they kept the bar open. They started selling mini Snickers bars for $3.50, and with each Snickers you got a "free" beer of your choice ;D It was an ingenious way to get around their suspension until local lawmakers closed the loophole. weknowhowtolive Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 They have that on a lot of pflueger reels now too. Free longsleeve for 6 bucks. Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted June 26, 2008 Super User Posted June 26, 2008 I've been wanting an Abu shirt for awhile, but $200 is a bit steep for me. Quote

Super User burleytog Posted June 30, 2008 Super User Posted June 30, 2008 At least Abu has shirts available. The shirts are available in black or white. The sizes do run quite large. I got an XL that would have swallowed Andre the Giant. Quote
