Three salesmen check into a hotel. The night clerk at the hotel charges them the normal rate of $10. When the hotel owner returns the next morning and asks about business, the clerk tells him of the three new customers and that he had received $30 from them. The owner then tells the clerk that he made a mistake in the billing. Since the three men came as a group, they should have been given the discount rate of $25 combined. He then gives $5 to the clerk with instructions to return it to the three men.

The clerk, not knowing how to divide the $5 between the three men, decides to return $1 each to the men and pocket the other $2, which he does.

Here's the problem. The men paid $9 each ($27) after receiving the $1 discount and the clerk kept $2. That's $29. They originally paid $30. What happened to the other dollar?

its late and im tired so this may be way off track but wouldnt the last dollar be divided into 33 cents so that each salesman really paid 9 dollars and 33 cents

Easy, nothing happened to the other dollar. because they didnt pay 27$, they paied 30$.  the rate was 25$ + 1$ to each person = 28$ add the 2$ the clerk pocketed = 30$

Correct.

Or, another way to look at it:

Hotel = 8.33 x 3 = 25

Clerk = .67 x 3 = 2

Rebate = 3 x 1 = 3

Total = 25 + 2 + 3 =30
