Super User 5bass Posted June 2, 2008 Super User Posted June 2, 2008 What did you think about that show? I was less than impressed and whoever said Kimbo can hang in MMA, might want to get him some training on the ground before he gets killed. Kimbo got lucky. Quote
Crabcakes Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I missed it but my buddies said it wasn't too great. From what I hear they had the fights on a short leash and stopped some early? Elite XC has a few good fighters but as a league it really can't hold up to some of the other organizations. I do like how they co-promote with other groups though. UFC 84 was really good though. Lots of good new talent. Quote
bassdocktor Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I didn't think it was too bad, but not exciting. I completely agree Kimbo got really lucky. I thought it was over in the second round when he was just getting beat on. Considering his 2 past fights haven't gone past 1 round it probably wasn't too bad. He does have alot of power that was easy to see in some of his escapes/counters. Quote
preach4bass Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I watched a fight and a half and enjoyed it. It was the first time I've ever saw that kind of fighting. I did come away from the last fight wondering if it was "rigged". The ref only broke up the fight when the balloon-eared guy had Kimbo on the ground. That's when crazy-ear was at an advantage. As a newbie to watching the sport I felt like the ref wanted Kimbo to win. He even talked to Kimbo a couple of times like he was an old bud, while the ear dude didn't get the "preferential treatment." Whether it was a rigged fight or not, it was definately a lot better than boxing (boring) or wrestling (way too fake). I'd watch it again if it came on free TV. Quote
SuskyDude Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 KImbo got served another stiff, and had trouble with him. Thompson is the very defenition of a bum. He's lost 6 of his last 8, and has a glass jaw allows him to get knocked out quickly by skilled fighters (not kimbo). Aleksander E. knocked him out in less then in a minute and it took kimbo two rounds (or 3, I cant remember) to get a sketchy ref stop. Kimbo's a bum. Mediocre hands, no ground game or kicks, and he gasses in less than a round. It's bad for the sport that he gets as much publicity as he does. Hopefully someday he'll face a real heavyweight and the fraud will be exposed. Unfortunately EliteXC will keep feeding him stiffs to beat so that they can sell tickets with his name on them. In other MMA new: I keep hearing rumors of Fedor vs. Sylvia. Hearing that Fedor is slowly but surely working the kinks out w/ UFC. I would much rather see Fedor vs Couture, at least that would be a fight. Say your prayers Timmy boy, your about to be humiliated. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted June 2, 2008 Author Super User Posted June 2, 2008 The hoopla when the fighters came out was WCW'ish and just plain stupid. Baroni took about 10 minutes to strut to the ring like he was some pimp strollin' down main street.....then when he made it to the ring, he got knocked out. Lawler vs. Smith was a good fight....both of those guys are legit MMA fighters. I was a little bummed that they didn't get to finish their fight. Quote
SuskyDude Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 The hoopla when the fighters came out was WCW'ish and just plain stupid. Agreed. The announcers were just plain awful. EliteXC is garbadge. Kimbo is garbage. Course, I wouldn't mess with him. Quote

Fedor is going to KILL big Tim. I bet Tim isn't sleeping too well these days with Fedor on the horizon. Faber vs Pulver is about to go down here in a few minutes on Versus.....this should be a decent fight if Pulver can keep it on the feet. Faber is no joke though.....thats one 145 pound dude that I wouldn't mess with. ;D As for the Kimbo fight being rigged......I can see that. Elite XC's maiden voyage in prime time TV and their headliner gets beat by a chump? Not. Elite XC knows that Kimbo is their meal ticket at the moment, they're not going to let him lose against someone he's supposed to pound into the ground. I sure wish they hadn't stopped it.....Thompson took some big shots and kept coming. Quote

Super User 5bass Posted June 2, 2008 Author Super User Posted June 2, 2008 preach4bass, if you're looking to see some real MMA fighting before the weekend is over, turn your TV to the Versus channel now. Jens Pulver is about to fight the champ Urijah Faber here in a few minutes. I've been waiting on this one for several months. They're walking to the cage right now. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted June 2, 2008 Super User Posted June 2, 2008 I'm not an MMA fan and the show sucked. Quote
SnowBass23 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Yeah, it was interesting but certainly not worth calling home over. I agree it felt WCWish and I got the feeling that CBS was trying to get an edge in the market with the UFC, just so they can get mone yfrom advertisers. Also, when Lawler was fighting (I think) there was one iffy moment when they were on the ground, suddenly the camera switched to a wide shot of the arena, then went back to the guys against the fence. It might just have been crappy choices by whatever producer/director was picking the camera feeds but it felt fishy. Also, the way the cameras could never get a good angle around the refs (so the action was blocked at times) sucked. I guess that is just part of the learning curve though. I'd watch it again, with skepticism. I vote for anyone kicking the crap out of that goody-two-shoes whiney Matt Hughes. Quote
SuskyDude Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Faber by decision! Great fight! I was pulling for Pulver, but what can you do. Man Pulver's got a chin, he ate alot of right hands! Faber's a bad man though. Too much for Pulver, at least on this night. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted June 2, 2008 Author Super User Posted June 2, 2008 Faber is lightning fast....and his elbows are devastating. He put one heck of a lump on Pulver's left eye with an elbow, then he just kept poppin' it with the left jab and left hook the rest of the fight. Congrats to both guys for taking 25 minutes of pure abuse. Great fight. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted June 2, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted June 2, 2008 I caught about 40 seconds of it while flipping channels, then kept flipping. 'Nuff said. Quote
SuskyDude Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I caught about 40 seconds of it while flipping channels, then kept flipping. 'Nuff said. If your talking about the EliteXC, then you made the right choice. There was nothing "Elite" about it. Talk about putting the wrong foot forward for MMA. It's okay, MMA isn't going anywhere, thankfully! Quote

Still a Bigbuckifan Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 The elite girls fight was preaty awsome :D . The kimbo fight should have been stoped in the second round . He took like 1:20 of strait punches with out defending him self. Quote
BadKarma42 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I flipped to it when the hockey game was on break. I wasn't impressed with the show. Kimbo did not live up to the hype. I think the stoppage was very questionable. The lawyer fight was good. Unfortunate stoppage. Both those guys can hit and take a hit. But, they were also UFC fighters.... As for the Pulver/Faber fight, I had hoped to see Pulver win. It was a good fight. That is the first I had really watched Faber. He was tough. Quote
bocabasser Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 kimbo slice will get waxed by a good ground technician. i still like him though--did you see that other guys ear explode? wow what a puncher slice is. as for that cat faber--he is one bad dude. Quote
key chain bass guy Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 A glitzy presentation with fireworks and loud music can not cover up an inferior product. Quote
Jake P Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Kimbo didn't do too well? I have seen a ton of his videos and he looks like he can hold his own and much much more. But then again that isn't against professional fighters... Quote
SuskyDude Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 kimbo slice will get waxed by a good ground technician. i still like him though--did you see that other guys ear explode? wow what a puncher slice is. Kimbo Slice will get waxed by a good striker too! You think he's a good puncher? He looked like an amatuer! (oh wait, he is!) Thompson is a glass-jawed punching bag who gets KO'd all the time, and Kimbo couldn't do it! His punches were SLOW, even for a heavy weight. Im not impressed by this guy, at least not yet. If he can get a convincing win against anyone half-way decent, then I'll consider watching him again. But that wont happen soon, because EliteXC will keep feeding him bums and washed up has-beens so they can make money. Quote
