Super User Bankbeater Posted April 18, 2008 Super User Posted April 18, 2008 I was in bed this morning and at first I thought the wind was blowing. Then I realized that the stuff inside the house was shaking. It was centered in southern Ill and I tell you what, it got my butt out of bed in a hurry. Quote
Fishing Doug Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I slept through it....except my phone kept ringing-my friends wondered if I slept through it. yeah, those conversations could have waited...4:30 am is not my favorite time of day for any conversation... Quote
Bass XL Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I'm not sure if I felt it. I can remember feeling a rumble, but I dont know if it was the earthquake. Everyone in my house got woken up by it...except me. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 18, 2008 Super User Posted April 18, 2008 Here's the story: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351698,00.html Quote
fooman Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I slept right through it and I usually feel everything Quote
Popeye Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I gotta email my Mom and brothers and sister in Kankakee, Ill and see if they felt it that far North! We have over 300 quakes a year here in Kalifornia but about 99% of them are so small that you never even know they happened (3 or less mag on the richter scale). It's the BIG one that scientists are 100% sure will happen that I'm concerned about. The Island of Kalifornia - sounds cool, but is it?? Quote
TeamBerettaGold Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I thought someone had broke in our apartment this morning, so I woke up to what sounded like someone walking fast on the wood floors, alot of creaking, walked into the livingroom expecting to have a visitor and no one was there. Looked at the shelf with all the Jack daniels bottles on it, and you could see the empty ones rattling a little and the half full one swishing around a little. Was pretty crazy. Went back to bed thinking I was still run tight from last night to find out that there was an earthquake. Quote
deadeye32. Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I slept right through it here in Indianapolis, but my wife sure did wake me up and let me know. Plus all of our friends were calling from 5:30-7:30 asking if we felt it. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 18, 2008 Author Super User Posted April 18, 2008 We just a 4.5 aftershock at 10:15. I wonder if this is going to keep on all day :-/ Quote
xboxfisherman Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Slept right through it. Guess some of the patients at the hospital my GF works at felt it though. Quote
FishingBuds Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Yep I felt it That just doesn't happen much around here. My dog Charlie was going nuts outside this morning right before it happen, he was what origanly woke me up. Felt the after shock one too, now O'Charlie is out there just howling :-/ spooky I can see why friends call ya up at 4:30 in the morning for that Quote
Popeye Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Yep, dogs and other animals/insects can sense when a quake is about to happen. Scientists think the animals pick-up on the electromagnetic pulses/vibrations given off by a quake several minutes before we humans actually feel it. Kinda like a "quake alarm" if you have a dog around the place:o) Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 18, 2008 Super User Posted April 18, 2008 A 5.2 pointer doesn 't even make it to the news in Kali. That 's what my wife says ( she 's a Cali girl ). Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 18, 2008 Super User Posted April 18, 2008 I heard the house creaking quite a bit around 5:30 this morning. Thought it strange at the time as there wasn't any wind. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2008 Super User Posted April 18, 2008 I didn't feel this one (I'm too far away) but I remember when I was little I lived in California and experienced the Northridge earthquake. Large earthquakes are incredibly strange to experience for the first time It's very disorienting to have your house moving from side to side under your feet, especially if you are in the disoriented state because the quake just woke you in the middle of the night. I remember waking up and not having a clue what was going on, the house was shaking violently and it was dark...and I was only 6. Quote
Scott C Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 i slept through the first one, but felt the 4.6 aftershock here at work mid morning. at first, i thought i was losing it.....but then others said they felt it too. *whew* interesting link: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php Quote
