BassinBoy Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Hey, I fish a series of farm ponds that I need some help with. Actually its a particular fish. This pond has a series of three ponds connected and you can only fish two. They are very small with a little weeds, one dock in the biggest pond and a total mud bottom. In the lowest, biggest pond, there is a pair of 5-6 pounders that are incredibly smart and own the pond. The pond is loaded with bluegill so they have as much forage as they want. In the past two years I have had them look at a frog twice, swipe at a crankbait, and nearly eat a bluegill I snagged and reeled in. I have pretty much figured out where they hang. I miday they are either deep on pine trees (10 feet) or in under the dock in the middle. You cant skip lures under the dock because it is attached to the shore but floats in the water. When the sun just starts to set, they roam the entire pond but pay no attention to lures. The boy who lives there caught the one bass a while back (maby 3 years) on a frog and he said it was around 4 pounds. Its been a goal to catch these bass but I cant seem to get there attention. Im open to suggestions on how to catch these big bass. Thanks for the replys Quote
Bassnbrett101 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Have you tried a wacky worm? sometimes the slow fall will get their attention. Other than that they sound really tricky Quote
Popeye Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I second dumbdog11's suggestion OR try a 6" - 8" swimbait like a Huddleston. Quote
ohiobassmaster93 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 i got this one rapala crankbait that looks like a bluegill and i would probably use that cause of the amount of bluegill in there Quote
BirdNestBen Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I fish on a big private lake where it's usually tough to fool the big bass in there.... We've caught the big ones Texas rigged with a Blue Fleck powerworm..... Also you might try a Zoom Fluke........ Quote
calandra Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Along with the suggestions here I would add to it a black grape Charlie Worm Texas rigged, A 3/8 oz black/blue rattle jig and matching Charlie Craw or a Gene Larew 5'' Super Salt Craw or for kicks a 3/8 oz white rattle jig with a Zoom white Big Salty Chunk, a scum frog popper white/green, and last but not least, a black/gold or silver Bagley Bang-O-Lure tail spin. The key is to fish each of these as slow as possible. With the Scum Frog Popper and Bang-O-Lure tail spin, a light twitch, twitch followed by a 15 to 30 second pause. I would also use low vis green fishing line in the 12 to 14lb range and coat each of these lures with Mega Strike, not so much as to attract the fish, but I have found that with Mega Strike on my lures, once the fish bites he don[ch8217]t let go. In fact I never fish a frog bait without it. As for the White Jig, it may sound funny, but for some reason in ponds such as you described, I have had great success with this combo. If the slow retrieve don[ch8217]t produce, swimming this jig in a yo-yo type retrieve has produced some of my best catches in small coverless ponds. Quote
