Super User Redlinerobert Posted March 27, 2008 Super User Posted March 27, 2008 I think this goes too far. I'm a huge boxing fan, but honestly not much of a fan of this type of hand to hand combat. I may not have any kids myself but honestly I think it sends the wrong message to our youth. http://sports.aol.com/fighting/story/_a/too-young-for-ultimate-fighting/20080327092109990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001 Quote
jrhennecke Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 It's sad that someone even came up with this! Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 27, 2008 Super User Posted March 27, 2008 I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 27, 2008 Super User Posted March 27, 2008 What parent would let their child get involved with something like this? Falcon Quote
Super User Micro Posted March 27, 2008 Super User Posted March 27, 2008 I think that's demented. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 We did stuff like that when I was a kid, it just wasn't called ultimate fighting. It was called 'playing'. :-/ Quote
Other. Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 Will I be the only one on Bassresource that will not find anything wrong with this? Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 Will I be the only one on Bassresource that will not find anything wrong with this? Nope. I also have no problem with it. Think of it as "American style karate" Quote
SuskyDude Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 No Anime Other, your not alone. I think its perfectly fine! Safe, supervised, no kids on the streets or getting fat in front of the TV. I think its a great thing. Would any of you guys have a problem with kids boxing? How about karate, wrestling or even football? MMA isn't any more high contact or "aggressive" than any of these sports. Bad article with a slant against MMA. Too objective: sucker punches? I feel the author of this article probably has very little knowledge of MMA and the skill and discipline requried in training for this sport. Its come along way since the old days. Anything that captures kids imgination and get them away from the TV! Quote
Fish Man Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 im fine with it as well. i cant see how its all that different from karate. also i woudldfight all the time with my brother and friends with out protective equipment and i turned out fine. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 I don't see a problem with it. I think I could take 'em.. ;D Quote
Fish Man Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 wow....coulda sworn i just seen LBH in one of those video's lol jk ;D Quote
Super User grimlin Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 I have a big problem with it. However i'm keeping my mouth shut on why. :-X Quote
WIII-60 Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I think it's O.K. also. MMA gets a bad rap becuase people don't have the technical knowledge to understand it. No fault of theirs though, it's a complex mix of a lot of different things. Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 I have 4 sons & 3 grandsons; they all started football, boxing, & karate at very young ages. They were taught under proper supervision how to control both the physical and mental aspects of these sports. When confronted by the schools 9 year old bully my 7 year old grandson simply grabbed a thumb and pinkie calmly putting the bully on his knees until the teacher took the kid to the principal's office. Bingo. As long as some form of discipline is being taught, and its supervised I don't see anything wrong. Quote
John J. Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I don't see anything wrong as long as there's rules and adults or officials making sure things don't go out of hand. And I agree that is a great teaching tool in self-defense. If you teach a kid to self defend himself when he grows up to be a man, he will not fear anything and he will defend himself and loved ones. Now for kids I would agree with the use of padding, etc. to protect them as they are fragile when young. I see nothing wrong with it what so ever. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I see nothng bad about this. I know they have little kids boxing. I coud only see bad if they were fighting underground. Were the parents were beting on there kids. Quote
FishingBuds Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 No problem with it. I guess it could be worse and have them hang out on the street corner looking for the next thrill. But, it depends how the parent and teacher represent it and teach it. Just like Pit Bulls, the dog is fine, just bad breeding & teaching Quote
vicdotcom Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I have taken martial arts since the age of 4. We had full contact sparring that was always supervised but we didnt have any saftey equitpment. If done right and supervised correctly there will be no problem with this. I have gotten into 0 fights in my life and it was martial arts that gotten me out of all the situations I have encountered. BUT on the other side of the spectrum I have known martial arts schools that focus only on fighting and hurting (think cobra kai from karate kid). So the fact that kids are doing this isnt the problem. The problem will come about on how they are taught and structured. Vic Quote
Chad. Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 It right up my alley i figure at least it's not on the streets Quote
guitarkid Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I think there should be an age limit. 13 or older. -searoach Quote
Fish Chris Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 First off, I'm a HUGE fan of MMA. So much training, talents, and skill involved. Nobody gets in that ring that doesn't want to, and nobody that doesn't want to watch it, is being forced to. With that said, I think karate, wrestling, boxing, etc. with proper protective gear and supervision, and with stricter guidelines (less chance for serious physical injury) is okay for young kids.... But I don't believe that straight up, blood drenching, knock the guys teeth out, and break his bones, UFC fighting is okay for young children. I believe that if the kid really gets into his karate, wrestling, boxing, etc (if it becomes more to his life than just a passing fad) that by the time he becomes 18, he should be allowed to knock a guys teeth out, break his bones, split his face open, and / or recieve the same treatment from another fully willing opponent. But I believe that straight up UFC is, and should be, a mans game. Just my .02 cents, Fish UFC baby ! :-) Anderson Silva is da' man ! Who can beat him right now ? PS, I said, "until he's 18"..... but how about if the guidelines just become progressively less strict, until they are completely lifted (at least to the normal regulations of adult MMA / UFC) at the age of 18..... fish-fighting-illini Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 At first I had trouble making up my mind. Kind of could see Robert's and kind of could see the its okay side. After readiung Chris's post I'm all for his take on it. They kids can UFC when they are adults. Let them be kids while you. Plus the bone break stuff and etc just doesn't seem right for kids. Quote
