Just heard on CNN, a Ray with about a 5 ft span jumped up onto the deck of a boat that was traveling approximately 25 mph and collided with the woman on the front deck. She died soon after.  :o

Dang man... I just read the story.  Sad stuff.  I was expecting the barb to have pierced through her but it was the intial contact and her falling back and hitting her head from what it said.

Kids in the boat too... so sad to have them see that up close and all and have to experience that.  All in the family... just having a nice outing... then the dark clouds... egh.

It's not right.  Have any of you heard of one of these things leaping out of water before?

I've heard of Barracuda's coming out of the water and really messing people up.  Never a ray.  :o

I heard of one incident involving a ray jumping into a boat before.  Marlin and other bill fish have been known to jump into the boat while hooked.  What a freak accident and very sad.

I saw a similar story before about a sturgeon jumping and almost killing a guy on a jet ski. What are the odds of that happening?!?

I have personally seen rays free jump out of the water. It is spectacular! One time in the keys I saw a huge spotted eagle ray jump 6-8 feet into the air, no kidding! Also, in October during a lab in Tampa Bay, I saw a stingray jump all the way out of the water. Very cool thing to see, very sad that someone way killed by it.

medical examiner says that she died from blunt trauma to the head. she was at the bow of the boat going 25 mph and the ray jumped out of the water and hit her head on.

If you do ocean fishing then you'll know about the flying fish.  We were cruising about 30 knots going to our snapper hole when one of them boogers flew into the boat and smacked my buddy on the side of the face.    I threw the fish back unharmed but my buddy not only dang near crapped his drawers but had a nice red mark on cheek.

Flying fish jumping into the boat though is actually a common occurance.
