I've been hunting on ebay for a deal on a base roof rack to carry my kayak on my new car and over the past week have seen three sell for more than they would cost retail. One was used and with shipping sold for ten bucks more than it would have cost brand new! What are people thinking?

Has anyone else seen this happen? :-?

You should ask Cart 7 he is one of the more savvy E bayers here.

All the time!   :-?   Not a big fan of ebay for that reason.  Nice to look, but most of the deals are not that great.   Check out Craigslist, much more for negotiation.  Plus you can find stuff locally more easily.   Good Luck!

Ebay used to be great for getting a deal on lightly used or overstock stuff, but far too many people have figured out how to make a lot of cash selling on there.  Too many people hop online and buy what they want from ebay thinking they are getting a deal, without researching the price/product ahead of time.  One in twenty sales on there is a good deal after shipping. craigslist is much better

I think BUCKEYEone is right, people don't do the research. Also I think people just don't mind paying for convenience. Rather sit on their butt than have to actually get up an go to the store.

I agree 100% unless I'm selling something.

I've seen people at regular auctions get caught up in the bidding and go overboard on price, that's not just an Ebay thing.

Sellers love those kind of people, other bidders despise them.

I've had a lot of luck finding deals on ebay over the years and I've also done well with a couple sales but this recent experience was frustrating.

Update: I found the exact rack I was looking for on Craig's List. I'm meeting the seller today so here's hoping he's not a nut job who'll knock me out and run me through the wood chipper.

Yakfish,

Let us know you didn't get whacked.

If he is crazy give him a good fight. ;D

;D

Just got back. Good guy and the rack is in great shape. I got an awesome deal even for just the base parts but he let me have the fairing which along with rest of it is worth more than twice what he was asking. I'm a Craig's List true believer now.

Now i can get the boat to the water. :D

Too bad it's all still frozen. :-/
