Olebiker Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 At 5:00 a.m. it goes to 70 so the house will warm up a bit before I get up at 5:30. At 7:30 a.m. it goes back to 60 until 4:30 p.m. when it goes back to 70. At 11:00 p.m. it goes back to 64. SWMBO won't let me set it any lower than that at night. I am in North Florida and use a heat pump. I just started using a programmable thermostat and I am not sure that it is saving me any money yet. Quote

moby bass Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I put in a woodburner when I built. Windows are open year round upstairs to get rid of excess heat. Coldest room on main floor gets about 67. Nice room to go into to escape the heat. Rest of main floor stays a toasty 70. I usually only burn it for extended periods when it is consistently cold, below 20. Otherwise house gets too warm. Thermostat stays on 68 any other time. Nice thing about it, wood is free! Quote
Red Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 mine is broke, so if it gets cold, you turn it on until it is hot, then you turn it off. if it gets hot, i turn on the window AC(with the remote ;D) when i first moved here the electric bill was well over $200, i went around and caulked all the windows, it went down to $130 and hasent gone back up! We usually burn between 3-4 full cords a winter. This year it has been so brutally cold, I bet we burn at least 5. We also save a ton on electricity by not having to use the dryer in the winter. We have two clothes lines near our wood burner. Clothes dry in no time. Quote

I don't know what the cost of gas heat is these days but heating with oil here in New England is simply outragous. We paid about $3.35 a gallon last fill up. Quote

My programmable thermostat is set as follows for winter: 70 at 6:00 a.m. 65 at 9:00 p.m. On "hold" at 65 if my wife works (sub teacher) for the day. Light bill has averaged in the $90's and natural gas in the $70-90 range. Summer: 78 from 6:00 a.m. 'til 9:00 p.m. ("hold" at 80 if we are out for the day) 72 overnight (we like to "snuggle" a bit at night ) Light bill (while running a pool pump for 4 hrs a night) averages around $150-$250 a month; gas is only $25-30 in the summer. Hookem Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 In the winter, it depends on the weather. Its a constant switch from heat to A/C and then back again. Heat - usually around 60-62 A/C - usually around 68-72. Yesterday, we had the heater going. The day before, the A/C. Today, neither. Tomorrow, A/C. Saturday, probably nothing. Sunday, heater. If you don't like one or the other, give it a minute. The weather will change. Quote
