I quit dipping 17 months ago.  After smoking for more years than I care to count, I threw them away this past New Year's Eve and haven't had one since.  Quitting cold turkey ain't easy, let me tell ya :P

A big congratulations man!  You're doing yourself a huge favor.  I'm a teenager in high school so I get pounded with what smoking does to you, and some of the facts are disturbing.  But the good news is after you quit:

At 20 minutes after quitting:

blood pressure decreases

pulse rate drops

body temperature of hands and feet increases.

At 8 hours:

carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal

oxygen level in blood increases to normal

At 24 hours:

chance of a heart attack decreases

At 48 hours:

nerve endings begin regrowth

ability to smell and taste improves

Between 2 weeks and 3 months:

circulation improves

walking becomes easier

lung function increases

The benefits are huge!  Keep it up!

FD,

After 22 years at 4+ packs a day (chain smoker) I quit 17 years ago. If I could do it you certainly can. Keep on Keeping on!

A friend at work smoked from age 9 to 47.  Heart attack at 47.  Hasn't smoked since.  That was September 2007.  Gained some weight but doing fine.  Weight is gained somewhat because you regain your sense of taste and smell.

Right back at you!! I saved $49.00 this week not smoking.

Hang in there, if you stay quit for a year and save the money, you could buy one of those fancy new side imaging sonars that all the pro's have on their rigs now. ;)

Whenever you get the urge to smoke, log onto the website instead.

I quit in November 2003. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I smoked 2 since, alcohol involved.

Get a good exercise program if you didn't have one. It will really make you see and feel the benefits. I gained alot of weight so be prepared. I did quit when I ahd surgury on one of my feet which made it worse.

I feel a lot like I lost my best buddy sometimes. Non smokers will never understand how that first cig in the morning felt (especially with a cup of joe). I really miss it when driving on trips so I play my music louder now.

PM if you need anything. I will give you all of the encouragement I can. You will feel much better! Eventually :-?

If you find yourself smoking again in the near future then go to the doctor and get a prescription for Chantix.  It blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain so even if you do smoke .... you won't like it!  It works!  I couldn't quit without it.  I enjoy smoking too darn much.   ;D

Great thread guys, there's some good info in there that will be helpful.  I'd like to quit sometime soon...the problem is that it's almost impossible to quit if you don't want to or don't have a noticeable reason to quit.  It makes it tougher that my grandmother is 93, in good health for that age, and has been smoking two packs a day since she was a teenager.

And Alpster - 4+ packs a day?  Wow, that's amazing that you quit, congrats.

Troutfisher - interesting info

GeneinTX - I know what you mean.  Nothin' like that first cig in the morning....or the cig after any meal...or the one you have with a beer or several beers...or the one after relations.....it's gonna be tough  :-/

Thanks Tony,

My late wife said, she could always find me in the store by following the cough. I used to think that everyone stood over the toilet and hacked & coughed up blood for 20 minutes each morning before they had their first smoke and coffee. When I was in the hospital in GA in the 70s, a rec. therapist said to me " you can't wait to finish that cigarette so you can light another one. I said "I think you are right." LOL

I read the stories above and how well I remember saying to myself " if I could just stop eating, drinking coffee or having a beer, I could stop smoking. Truth is, I only enjoyed 2 or 3 of the 75 or 85 smokes a day. The rest were just a mechanical habit, like a baby's pacifier.
