frogtog Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 52 hours and 26 minutes thats how long it has been since I have had a cigarette or coffee. Quit cold turkey Sunday at 5:pm and it's about to kill me. I'm eating everything in sight, maybe it will get better tomorrow. :-/ Quote
Dean Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Do whatever you can not to smoke, smoking is bad, we all know that. But whats worse is when you are a fisherman, and a lifelong smoker in his 60s, huffing and puffing while trying to fish. You can do it , if you try. Quote
preach4bass Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Good luck frogtog. Not only is this good for your health, but also for your wallet. 2-3 bucks for a pack of cigarettes, and if I remember correctly, didn't you have to buy your wife a new ride because you smoked in hers once? : Good luck! Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 I'm rooting for ya Frog. Stop watching the clock or you will be watching it for years to come. Do something physically active when you get the craving to light up and may the force be with you. Quote
frogtog Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 Preach you don't forget much do you? I had almost forgot that myself. Quote
Popeye Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 KEEP at it my friend!! You CAN do it!! Munch on lots of carrot and celery sticks. Chew lots of sugarless gum. Use the nicotine patches (they WORK great) or the nicotine gum to "take the edge off". Try to drink plenty of WATER and take several DEEP breaths when you get THAT urge! Drink some soothing GREEN TEA. It will give you a little caffine and boost your respitory system. HANG in there!! After 3 - 4 days your body will pretty much have cleansed itself and you WILL have cravings less and less!! IF possible, start some exercise program or just take some walks. Exercise really helps take away the cravings for cigarettes and coffee. BEST of LUCK to you!! VERY hard thing to do, BUT one of the BEST things you can do for yourself and your life!! Quote
Jake P Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Good luck frogtog. Not only is this good for your health, but also for your wallet. 2-3 bucks for a pack of cigarettes, and if I remember correctly, didn't you have to buy your wife a new ride because you smoked in hers once? : Good luck! 2-3$?!?! I wish, i pay 5.25$. I tried to quit and it lasted about 2 days and i was really temperamental and everything was makin me angry and i couldnt take it anymore. I keep tellin myself i will quit eventually i will quit but i need to do it instead of talkin about it. It doesnt help that im a huge procrastinator.GOOD LUCK FROGTOG! I really hope you kick the habit. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Congratulations! I know it is extremely difficult but keep on trucking. We want you around for a long, long time. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Hang in there Frogtog. I know it's difficult, but it's the best thing you can do for your health. Good luck. Falcon Quote
slomoe Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Its not going to get any easier if your still counting the days and hours. Try to put it out of your mind as much as possible and take it one day at a time. We're rooting for ya Frog. Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Frog, I'm with you. I had my last cigarette this morning, and on my way to work decided to hold off on coffee for a while too, as coffee only makes me want a cigarette more. I'm approaching 10 years of smoking, and I want to be smoke free before then, today is as good as any! Fight the good fight, and I'll be on your heels! Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Here's another guy in your corner! The first couple days are the worst... frog if you made it 2 full days then you can make it a third! Once you make it on the 3rd day- call the 4th and so on. It gets better pretty fast. I'm sure smoking is a little different but I quit dipping cold turkey... after 3 or 4 days it was not too bad... the habit, not the addiction, was the lingering thing that took a while to get over. The first 2 days were very tough.... I was light headed and dizzy & had a bad headache from the withdrawal. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Frogtog and Buckeye, Don't ever think it's impossible. I smoked 4 packs a day (chain smoker) for 22 years. Quit when I got the chickenpox 17 years ago. If I could do it, you can do it better! You have to get tough with yourself. All you ever have to do is, keep them out of your mouth. You won't crave them forever. After about 6 months, I couldn't stand to be around a smoker. I still don't! The addiction and habit will go away if you hang tough. God bless, Ronnie Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I quit for three months while I went through basic training, and luckily while doing so I had drill sergeants screaming and young guys crying to keep me distracted from how bad I wanted a smoke. I never should have picked one up after that, but I did. My motivation is not having to sneak around the corner of the house so my 11 month old son doesnt see me smoking outside. (not to mention the $1800 savings a year!) I think after the initial fight I'll just have to worry about the random urges and someone lighting up next to me. Quote
frogtog Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 Getting weaker by the minute, I'm going to find some one who smokes and just hang around for a while. Maybe I could just shoot the dog, he just messed the floor up knowing I was in here on the computer, he could have barked or something. He hasn't the faintest idea what he is dealing with. Little $#@#@! Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Stay cool frog,... you are setting an example for alot of people. You all are very inspiring. I have been giving quitting a thought and may call on this support myself one day. Frog,...you'll be able to say,.."remember when...." Stay tough, I'm rooting for you. Give me hope! Quote
frogtog Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 Russ say it ain't so. :- You know you don't smoke do ya? This is tuff I have never encountered anything like this before. How can the Law allow them to sell this stuff with out a prescription. I'm about to go nuts so I'm going for a walk down to the creek to see if the Shad are running yet. Later Quote
Popeye Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Frog: as I previously said, the nicotine patches WORKED great for me and the nicotine gum has worked for others I know who successfully quit smoking! The patches, combined with chewing sugarless gum REALLY takes the edge off and helped me get through the first HARDEST 3 - 4 days off cigarettes! IF you decide to use them, get the 21/22 mg STRONG ones to start with. I ended up cutting them in half when the cravings lessened after the first week (and they WILL LESSEN the longer you abstain!). You've already made it this far and I certainly hope you make it all the way and become an ex-smoker. Your lungs and body will rejuvinate itself completely in a year or two, depending on your diet and any exercise routine you care to follow. GOOD LUCK!!! Quote
slomoe Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I have used the patches as well and had great results. Even after having slipped an had a smoke, the cravings just weren't what they used to be. Quote
jrhennecke Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Good Luck. One of the hardest things I have ever done is quit tobacco. Hang in there. Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 didnt quite expect to be THIS anxious, I just got mad at the garage door opener for not working on the first click. Not a big fan of (excuse me) hacking up all the crap I've been leaving in my lungs over the past ten years. Frog, you got that goin on too? I'm heading out to practice casting in 10 inches of snow. Quote
frogtog Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 Buckeye I keep getting sleepy as heck and want to eat every thing in site. Maybe we need to write down all the symptoms so when some one else tries they will know what to expect. I bet someone has all ready done that and we haven't seen it yet. : Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I hear ya, I keep snacking on everything I can to keep from getting bored or restless Quote
jemackinnon83 Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Quitting is easy, I do it every year:). For me the first week or so isn't extremely bad because I'm all gung ho about quitting. It's when I get 2 or 3 weeks under my belt and I say "Aw, one won't hurt". Then I slowly start bumming cigarettes from coworkers/friends. Soon after I'm back at the store buying them. I know these aren't very encouraging words, but I'd like you to know why it didn't work for me. We all know it can be done, just look at these guys replys. Good luck. Quote
