fish-fighting-illini Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I thought this might be funny. Below are a few questions from our daughters 3rd grade homework Do me a favor and don't answer them in the thread just answer 3 out of 4 or got em all or got em all but had to think. No Googleing w/o trying first. The 3000ml to L one I kind of new but mainly because in college you convert Mil amps to amps a bazillion times in a 2-3 year period. I still had to double check myself. Problem #1 What is the best estimate for a large chalkboard? A) 3 mi'd 3ft c) 3yds D) 3in Problem #2What is the best estimate for the capacity of a small cooking pot? A) 2 gal 2L C) 2C D) 2 ML Problem #3 What is a reasonable temperature for a steaming hot cup of chocolate? A) 200 deg F 50 deg F C) 200 deg C D) 50 deg C Problem # 4 3,000 ml = ? L F) 500 H) 30 G) 300 J) 3 These are not that bad but getting around 50 and being rusty it was an adventure! Quote
CJ Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I don't know how many I got right. You didn't post the answers! ;D Just playin'. Ahhh...Estimating and Reasoning. I know exactly how you feel. I have spent countless hours with my oldest son, he's in the 4th grade now. I get frustrated cause alot of the questions in their assignments are almost asking for an opinion or there isn't a clear answer. It's sad cause he has to do his homework, then I have to do his homework to check it! Oh yeah....IT GETS WORSE! Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted February 26, 2008 Super User Posted February 26, 2008 Strut! Boast! I got'em all correct. Of course, I lived overseas for ten years, so have become somewhat adept at Metric vs archaic US conversions. 8-) Quote

Popeye Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Even though the metric system is quite easy to understand and learn, just think of the money that would have to be spent modifying all the speed limit signs and car speedometers:o) Quote
tipptruck1 Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 The car speedos you wont have to do a thing with. Every car I have every been in has mph/kph all ready in it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 26, 2008 Super User Posted February 26, 2008 With the dumbing down of Americans do you really believe the vast majority of us will be able to do metric? I doubt it. Quote
the captain Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 With the dumbing down of Americans do you really believe the vast majority of us will be able to do metric? I doubt it. What are you tryin to say are you sayin that the next generation is so stupid that we don't know anything.Ha yeah right I'm just kiddin but yall older people(20 is older to me so don't draw conclusions) should try takin some of them dang tests that they give us in school now a days. We gotta know metric standard and some classes have to know kelvin. We gotta know how to read all kindsa gauges and crap and we gotta be able to look at a sentence and tell exactly what is wrong with it whether it be fragmented or missin a comma or a phrase of somethin is misplaced. It'd make just about anyone's head spin and I am just getting started on the list. I could probably fill this page and several others with the crap I have had to learn over the past 11 years-yeah 11 years in school actually 12 if you count kindergarten. So we ain't dumbing down we are just gettin dragged down by all the crap that they want to try to teach us while wasting my time that I could be spendin in the crick. And I go to a little school compared to some of the others in this country(high schools) Quote
the captain Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Oh yeah I forgot to mention, around here there are a lot of dumb people but they aren't book dumb they're just common sense stupid past the point of no return and in my mind it's because of too much education. Quote

I suspect many, if not most, of the Team Depends members felt the same way when they were your age. You may be surprised how much smarter they get as you get a little older. Some of the old dogs are even learning new tricks. I know it is hard to believe, but during the Stone Age we did not have computers or MTV! It took an ice age to force us to learn how to build a fire and we could not make a Taco Bell run after drinking all night. I guess times have always been "tough". Imagine if you can, life before pizza. 8-) Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 26, 2008 Super User Posted February 26, 2008 The metric system is much simpler, I think it would be easier for people to learn. rw, in relation to what you said, I can't imagine life without pizza, but someone told me that before a couple decades ago, bagels weren't really sold anywhere but NY. Is that true? It seems weird to me that bagels are something relatively new to most of the country... :-? Quote
Other. Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I am 100% I got these all right. You guys think I am ready to take on a 5th grader? ;D Quote

fish-fighting-illini Posted February 26, 2008 Author Posted February 26, 2008 Ok funny stuff all around Long Mike boast you may Problem# 1 I thought 3 yardfs made the only sense but I thought 9ft seems like a huge chalkboard. Not in relation to a large room though Problem #2 was obvious but I though 2 cups doesn't seem like much of anything. In the smallest pot though I guess so. With 5 kids we don't often get a small pot of anykind out! Problem#3 I thought water boiled at around 200deg F so I thought you can't drink boiling water 50 deg C was around 122 deg F and I figured maybe that was a fairly hot drink? I always tend to overthink things! LOL Quote
alger319 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 hi, my name is john, and i'm not smarter than a third grader.. ;D Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted February 27, 2008 Author Posted February 27, 2008 100% smart alec kid! LOL Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 The U.K. used to use our system of weights and measures. After all, where do you think we got it from? I don't remember the dates and timing, but one day the government said to the public "On (say) January 1, 1980, the U.K. will convert to the metric system. Get ready for it. You have twenty years of warning." So the U.K. spent only twenty years to convert to a fully decimal system. If they can do it, why can't the great U.S. of A.? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 Why does metric make sense? Is it just because you have ten fingers and ten toes? A cup is a measurement representing the amount of water one can hold in their hands. A foot is...well an average male foot. A yard is three "foots". Our mesurements have meaning. There is nothing magical about a decimal or the metric system. Atoms don't know how much they weigh and stars don't know how far they are apart. Can anyone comprehend the distance of a light year measured in miles or kilometers? Quote
Dean Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I am 100% I got these all right. You guys think I am ready to take on a 5th grader? ;D Maybe....but I think they want , ya know, "less smarter people", like hookemdown, so no one over powers the competition. ;D ;D LOL jk Hookemdown no pun intended ;D Quote

We are the greatest why do we need to change? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 The metric system just seems to make more sense because the units and conversions are much easier to figure out and there are much fewer units for measuring different things. http://www.metric4us.com/why.html Quote
