I WAS LIVING IN HEAVEN AND NEVER REALIZED IT

Hey Fellas: I have been spending a lot of time in Brooklyn, visiting with Elaine and my relatives. It is looking like instead of a move down South I may be headed back to Brooklyn. Just being in all the old Italian stores. the availability of music and just the Groove of Brooklyn , is starting to look attractive again. I don't know if I still have the hustle to do it, and we have an 18 month to 2 year time frame to work with. It would cut into my Bass fishing time but I have to say the more I go back the more I realize that I grew up in Heaven

Well, you could LIVE in the warmth of the South and still VISIT Brooklyn.

Go for what the heart feels Muddy.  I've heard Brooklyn called a lot of things before, but never Heaven.   ;)

Hey RW that is true and like I said there is a long time frame and a lot to happen. The difficult thing to do is to live in the moment. I have just been so uplifted in spirit since I have reconnected with a lot of what i walked away from. I moved because i had 2 parents who were struggeling with thier health, they have both since passed away and my work is done here. The thing is where I work, if i move to Brooklyn I will loose my contact with these kids and I do not know if that would be too selfish of a move to make, time will tell.

Well, my friend, I know you are just thinking about this now, but there are people in all parts of the country that need the help you are trained to offer. Location is about life style, not "the job" in your field.

Yea you are right, Elaine and I really have a love for our neighborhood in Brooklyn, and her sense of comfort is imperative in my decision. Job Corps only has non residential programs in the Greater NY Area, but I havent even begun to see what other programs i would be usefull in.Looking for work at age 57 can be a problem

Go where the heart leads - hate to sound like a hallmark card - but I know its hard to leave home and familiarity of where you grew up.

Turning around what RW said, you could always live in Brooklyn and visit the South!

Besides, that's the way us South'rn'rs prefer it anyway!

Totally kidding. Sounds like you would fit in well down here.

My 2 concerns with living in the South are, not being close enough to visit home as much as i would want. Living in the Bible Belt, this could lead to a lot of discomfort for me. I lived in New Orleans and that was cool, lived in Covington La. and I was pestered constantly by people at the door trying to get me to join one religion or another and I am the wrong guy for that., , so I have to be careful and investigate the various Job Coprs and where they are located. I think NC and GA are my best shots. I would not like to go back to LA. or as far South as  Texas.

A piece of advice. Make sure the Brooklyn you're visiting now is what it was when you were younger and growing up there. Your preception of what it was and what it is now sometimes get clouded.

I had a similiar experience about ten years ago when I went back to my original home for the first time in 25 years.Like you I thought I had made a mistake leaving and thought real hard about going back to live.

As I started visiting the old home stead more and more over the next few years , I realized it or the people were not the same anymore. So I "m glad I waited a few years and made the correct decision for myself.

Oh by the way I grew up "IN ALMOST HEAVEN" (WV).

How 'bout a compromise? You could move South to New Jersey!

From what I gather, there are still some Italian families workin' Jersey.

Come on down to the Atlanta area...and bring my some freakin' pizza and bagels!!! :)

Drop some off here as you traveling to the ATL - and some of those meatballs we heard so much about from the last BR road trip.

Good luck in your decision making on job location and fishing location Muddy. People always say you can never go home and there is a certain truth to that. I Love being back in the state I was born and raised in but it is not the same as if I had never left. People change, neighborhoods change, but then change is natural as we have changed also. I like the slower pace here and even though most of the neighbors are from all over they all came by with baked goods and greeted us when we first moved in liked people did back in the 1950s. Here people look after each other and each other's property more. It is not an Arkansas thing as where I am there are lots of retirees from all over but especially from up north. It seems more a step back in time where people can live like we used to watching out for each other being friends not like the life in so many cities today where no one knows their neighbors or dares speak to each other. Our extended community had bad tornado damage from that same storm system and so many people (complete strangers that have moved here from all over this nation) have gone together to help clean up, rebuild, and help those in need. This is not a wealthy area but I have to say it is extremely wealthy in the spirit of giving and helping freely of others in need.

I know you have that same spirit and will be an asset wherever you decide to go. I wish you the best in your decision.

You could always go a completely different direction and come to the Midwest. Chicago has little Italy, Lake Michigan would be close by, and all the music you could want. And did I mention it's a lovely -20 with the windchill right now?

I thought heaven was West Virginia!

Muddy, I know how you feel.

When I venture back to New Orleans I get the feeling that I want to retire there.

Then I think of how the place has changed in all these years and that I am better off where I am.

But it is great to visit and enjoy all the great food and see friends and lots and lots of LSU bumper stickers and decals on the cars and trucks.

Muddy, why not Virginia?  I know we have some Job Corps centers in the western part of the state.   You'd be looking at a 1/2 day drive to NYC.   Some great fishing out that way, too.   Great state.  Great climate.   And you'd be near Burley.

Virginia has it all! Mountains, beaches, and its not TOO far from anywhere on the east coast, north or south.

Seriously, though, good luck in making your decision, but remember, you can always try something out and then do something else if it doesn't fit.

Thanks Micro the issue is there are 128 Job Corps all run by different vendors. I would like to stay with the Vendor I work for as I have 12 years consecutive service with them. I don't think the state could stand me and Burley in the same local. ;D

Muddy, Have you considered working in the Brooklyn Job Corps even though the kids are in an "outpatient" set up?

These kids could probably use employees that take their jobs to the next level, like yourself.

My training and speciality is in the Residential component of the program.
