Super User Marty Posted February 17, 2008 Super User Posted February 17, 2008 I downloaded the newer version a few weeks ago and something new is this window that comes up when you click to download the updates. Sure, I can select something and continue, but what the heck does it mean? What happens differently when one is selected vs. another? Why should you select something near your location? Quote
Other. Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 your downloading from the server. The closer you are to the server the lower the ping. If your ping is lower the connection is better. Pick either Usa #1 or Usa #2 assuming you live in the US. Lets say you choose Germany you would be updating it over in germany which takes longer due to ping. Thats why you want to pick the server which is closer to you. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 17, 2008 Super User Posted February 17, 2008 Anime is right. The different options are called "mirrors." They are alternative servers to download the same file. By storing the files on different servers around the world, there are increased download speeds for more people and less chance of losing the file due to a server outage. Quote
TruflShufl Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Nope, nope, it's all a conspiracy. They'll ask you a few more times and by then they'll be able to triangulate your coordinates then they're going to "Search and Destroy" ;D Quote
Fishin-Psyantist Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 I choose the USA 1 when I installed this on a computer 2 weeks ago and it worked ok for me. Seems like the new version is really slow about starting up for some reason. I double click on the icon and 20 seconds later the program finally pops up and begins to run. Duno whats up with that.
