justfishin Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I was cleaning out my fishing closet the other day and had some older issues of Bassmaster Magazine so I looked through some of them. I read a article about a guy whom uses only one lure, period. He has won countless tourneys on this lure and claims that he out fishes most people that go in the boat with him with this one lure. If that isn't enough, he only used one color as well, Tennessee Shad with a orange belly. I have seen these lures before but, never used them. It is the Devils Horse. A prop bait of sorts. Anyone ever thrown them? Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Hey Jim Yea it's a classic old bait made by SMITHWICK I found a link for you HERE IT IS: http://www.lurenet.com/catalog.aspx?catid=SmithwickDevil'sHorse I don't think you can click on it just cut and paste it it works that way I don't have this whole computer thing down yet : Quote
dukeintex Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Jim I still have a few of them...good lure. It has props on front and rear...makes good noise!!! I"m not sure if I have that particular color, but I still use mine when the situation calls for a top water lure. Quote
CyBasser Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I have them. I caught bass on them. But haven't yet figured yet a real pattern on when they are best. At times they catch you fish when nothing else gets them, then when you expect they would work bass just ignore them. They are supposed to work best on slightly rippled surface under low light and especially overcast conditions. Yet all the bass I got on them were under a bright sun... Quote
Guest avid Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 The trick with prop baits is to find that "tune' that triggers the bass. All the really good prop bait guys I know, bend both props untill they get the exact action they are looking for. Quote
justfishin Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 Yea Avid. I bend my props on my Torpedo's and such. I like prop baits and have seen the DH over the years and I honestly don't know why I never bought one. I saw some at a tackle shop in Baltimore. Next time I am down I guess I will buy a few. Plus it gives me a excuse to go to the Inner Harbor for some of those Baltimore Crab Cakes, LOL. Thanks muddy--------- www.lurenet.com/catalog.aspx?catid=SmithwickDevil'sHorse Quote
Chris Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 They are a great lure if you want to draw a fish out of cover. They are a good lure for stained water. They are a good lure for schoolers busting shad. They are a good river bait. I have also used them as a buzzbait with success. Standard colors I use is chrome black back and white black stripes. My trophy bass was caught on one. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 14, 2007 Super User Posted January 14, 2007 I have a couple and have caught fish with them, but the only lure in the box? I don't think so. JMHO Ronnie Quote
justfishin Posted January 14, 2007 Author Posted January 14, 2007 Yea Alpster, I thought the same thing. One lure in the same color and he keeps a whole tackle box full and when they start getting the finish knocked off them he gives them to his friends. Isn't this characterized as Excessive Compulsive Disorder?,LOL. skillet Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 One of the best top water days I've ever had was with a Devil's Horse. It was an old Miss. river run down south of Memphis. The fish were so aggressive they would have probably hit anything on top. I'll stick with the theory of it being that particular lure though. I was used to seeing them in sizes from 1/4 to 1/2 but I found one at a yard sale that is 6" long counting the eyes on each end. It looks like something you could go after peacock bass with. Has anyone seen one of these, maybe a Musky lure? I know nothing of fish north of the Mason-Dixon.... As Ever, Skillet Quote
BASS fisherman Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 I have the tennesee shad color. It was one of the first bass lures I ever bought. Thrown it alot, and have yet to catch a fish on it. One thing I was disappointed with though was the fact that the paint cracked all up and down the lure. I have no idea why but I think it had a small hole and water got into the whole and expanded the wood. But that is just a theory. I have alot of prop baits and catch very few fish on them. Something to work on this year I guess. Quote
CJ Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 One of the best smallmouth anglers in my area throws em'.It his prefered topwater for smallies here. Quote
Bass Mekanik Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 I use these in the firetiger pattern for Peacocks. It seems to work better than spooks and tiny torpedos when the peacocks are hitting on top. I haven't used them for Largemouth yet beacuse I am too impatient for slow topwater retrieves. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 An even better alternative IMO, is the Heddon Dying Flutter. Same bait, better construction. They are a great lure if you want to draw a fish out of cover. or for CREATING cover for humans, lol Quote
hi_steel_basser Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 So what do YOU do when fishing is slow? Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 14, 2007 Super User Posted January 14, 2007 When I lived in NJ I threw Smithwick's Devils Horse a lot. I really can't explain why, but I've drifted away from all propbaits to the point where I don't even carry one in my tacklebox. We used to re-shape the blades to get a sort of "sizzling" sound which seemed to work the best. Roger Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 3 different retrieves I use alot are the rip/stop (like peacock fishing), the continues steady, very "trackable" consistent retrieve and the last is a steady retrieve with erratic pulls and snaps, make the props make as many different sounds as possible, all mixed up. My favorite is the steady retrieve, like a buzzbait. This is the one you can get that sizzle like rolo was talking about. It's like a finesse version but the blades have be tuned dead on and even the landing from the cast can tweak them enough to mess up that "trickle sounding sizzle" . It sure is a deadly one though. So what do YOU do when fishing is slow? lol, long ride into the sun w/ no shades, see the wake? We were going from one end to the other, about 25 mins. 8-) Quote
56 crestliner Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 I just ordered a devils horse from BPS online. i ordered the Tennese shad. They didn't have the heddon Dying Flutter that i could find. Quote
justfishin Posted January 15, 2007 Author Posted January 15, 2007 Cool shades LBH. If you ever sneeze just phone me and I will get you a bed in the ER. It might take the Doc's awhile to remove those hooks though. Of course, I will have to put those lures in a Bio Bag because of the blood contamination and take them home to carefully document them and store them in my tackle bag for future reference for insurance purposes. I will do all I can to help. Thats just me, I give and give. ;D Quote
