Super User roadwarrior Posted February 6, 2008 Super User Posted February 6, 2008 My family spent a good part of yesterday evening in my fishing room. We don't have basements in most homes in this part of the country, but we sure need them! Tornado Watches started around 4:00, Warnings around 5:00. At 5:30 the National Weather Service declared a Tornado Emergency, a term that has never been used: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,328745,00.html Quote

Popeye Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Super glad you and your family are OK RW!! I've been in numerous tornadoes while living in Kankakee and they are the most violent and destructive storm on the planet. Once again, I am super glad you all got through that scary situation OK!! BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 6, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 6, 2008 I saw it heading straight over Memphis and towards you and it freaked me out! Glad you're ok!! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 6, 2008 Author Super User Posted February 6, 2008 The "defining intersection" in my little suburb is Poplar & Germantown Road. The largest, strongest, most intense cell in the system passed over this spot at 5:56 with 112 mph winds and moving at 75mph. This "spot" is approximately 1.5 miles from my house. Quote

Ky_Lake_Dude Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 We're all good here. We headed over to my grandmas cuz shes got a basement. It got pretty rowdy there for awhile. My moms best friend, her niece was at Union University which was demolished. She was trapped and it took awhile for them to get her out but shes ok. Like I said Union is completely demolished. They said on the radio that all of the women's dorms were destroyed and all of the mens dorms were destroyed also. A house right down the road from our house has a tree a went right through the middle of it. our family definitely dodged a bullet. Please everyone's prayers go out to all these people. Hey RW is it true that halp the Memphis airport is gone from the tornado? Quote
tntitans21399 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I got lucky, that storm came through about 11pm-2am, a couple of different storms. They went just north and south of where I live. But I heard it took down some houses and a couple of deaths. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 6, 2008 Author Super User Posted February 6, 2008 Some buildings at the airport were damaged, but the airport is open and the damage is manageable. Quote
skillet Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Glad you're OK RW. Thought about you when I heard where it was coming thru. We actually got more wind and rain when the 2nd front came thru. This must have been about 10:00. Seems like the last several spells of bad weather we've had have been morwe south than usual... As Ever, skillet Quote
Guest muddy Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 It's much weaker, split into 2 fronts and heading to PA now, we are under a flood watch, lots of rain and run off with frozen ground, nothing major , not as bad as you fellas in Tenn. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 6, 2008 Super User Posted February 6, 2008 1.5 miles. That is intense. I'm really glad to hear that it passed you by. Quote

Super User senile1 Posted February 6, 2008 Super User Posted February 6, 2008 I'm reading that there are 48 dead so far in the mid-south. It sounds like there was some wicked weather down your way, RW. I'm glad you and your family are safe. Quote
GatorBK Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Wow glad yall missed that. I had a big tree in my front yard that fell on the house when I was gone to a friends one day. Nothing like that tornado , but it was wild pulling in the driveway seeing a tree on your house. Quote
Cigarlover 1 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 WOW! That's a lot too close for comfort. Glad to hear you and your family are o.k. Quote

farmpond1 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Ditto! Good to hear you didn't make an unexpected trip to the land of Oz. A prayer goes out to those who did. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted February 6, 2008 Super User Posted February 6, 2008 These winter tornados are unreal. We had one level a small town in SW WI last month. Our prayers go out to all. Quote
KYbass1276 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 There is a link on a local news website of a tornado filmed in Germantown. I don't think it's the Germantown here. It had to have been the one in your neck of the woods. It's always nerve wreaking to hear them sirens go off. Good to see you made it ok. Quote
