Yakfish Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Old school gangsta rap Old school hip hop Old Insane clown posse albums(1-4) Little bit of Reggae(I love the beats and the way the words come out) Lemme find out Grimlin. I've been listening to the old Pete Rock and CL Smooth album recently, and Just picked up the Petestrumentals CD. Good stuff. Also Check out Guru's Jazzmatazz vol. 1-4 8-) If you like old hip hop check out rakim and eric b. paid in full and follow the leader albums are my personal favorites. just recently got into reggae, baby cham hit song on the airwave "ghetto story" was on repeat for me...lol Daimen marley Got some awesome songs from what i've heard from him. +1 Paid in Full is a good one. For other true old school rap don't forget Run DMC, BDP, Public Enemy, Slick Rick etc... Old school gangsta rap though? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. I can't believe that I'm so old that the early/mid 90's are considered "old school" :-/ Quote
Fish Man Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 i dont listen to very much rap but the few songs i do like arent from any particular artist just a few oddball songs or older songs like jay z.i also like a few song by ICP Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 31, 2008 Super User Posted January 31, 2008 metallica is the greatest. pre black album they were heavy thrashing metal, which is cool and all, i like it alot, but black album and later they really added a whole lot of variety into their music which i really like. i love all metallica, but i think i like post black album. (with exception to "and justice for all", that was one hella great album. probably my fav. post black album would be reload.) but dont get me wrong, pre black album still kicks ***!!!!! Quote
Fish Man Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 the thing about metallica is that they were great pre black and then they sold out, i will admit that i like both pre and post black and that if i was groing up in the 80's and my favorite band sold out id be ticked, thats what i love about Megadeth, even tho i dont agreew ith what their message is they havent changed since the begining and have done what metallica hasnt Quote

Kirk Hammitt replaced him. TS Quote
Fish Man Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 yea but what i was trying to say is that megadeth since the start has never sold out like metallica did and has always played thrash and not morphed into hard rock Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 31, 2008 Super User Posted January 31, 2008 what i like most about post black album metallica is that it has a big variety in tone. its not all the same amount of distortion, tempo, and the same power chords played blisteringly fast. some of the pre black album songs you can barely tell apart they are all so similar. post black album songs are all very distinguishable...some have a more blusy sound to them, some are slow and heavy metal, and other are acoustic. i think what i like most is the variety that they demonstarte in post black album songs. Big T Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 yea but what i was trying to say is that megadeth since the start has never sold out like metallica did and has always played thrash and not morphed into hard rock I understand, the funny thing about all bands is that they all sell out. If you ever listen to Nirvana's first album and then the next album that had Smell Like Teen Spirit you can definately tell a difference. These bands basically have to make an album that is going to make the label money, therefore they have to sell out. Evently they become so big that they can do what ever they want to though. For instance, Prince, he makes the kind of music he wants to because he is so successful that he can tell the record company to stick it. Â TS Quote
Fish Man Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 yea i still love metallica and as you said every band does it, its for the most part every bands dream to sell out and live the high life and id bet just about everyone would do the same thing in that situation Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 31, 2008 Super User Posted January 31, 2008 yeah same thing happened to Black Sabbath. their albums black sabbath, paranoid, master of reality, and volume 4 were all killer great. but you could tell they were changing their ways in volume4 because they started to use a synthesizer more and more. and then they came out with sabbath bloody sabbath. that album was pretty good, alot of the songs on it are way too techno for me (ie. "who are you") and after sabbath bloody sabbath, forget about it...that bad had WAY sold out....and then iommi had to kick out ozzy and that band just sucked afterward. its sad.... :-[ Quote
basspro48 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Mostly country but I listen to pretty much anything and everything. Country (classic and new), rock, alternative, R&B, some rap, classic rock, and I'm sure there's a few more...But I hate that stupid screamo stuff and hardcore rap, that stuffs just garbage... Which reminds me, anybody here heard of Foxboro Hot Tubs? It's all the guys from Greenday but under a different name, their style is a lot like the old greenday sound, which was awesome IMO (Warning was one of the best albums ever) Quote

Troutfisher Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Southern Rock, Country, and Bluegrass. What other music is there? Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. Mr. Earl Scruggs. Bill Monroe, Father of Bluegrass! The Dillards. And another classic group, The Kidd Brothers! Â (well, it's my group, but oh well!) Quote
bassboy1 Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I like a lot of the older country (70s and such) Some new stuff as well, with a bit of the in between stuff too. My playlist right now consists of: Alabama C. W. McCall Jerry Reed Montgomery Gentry Charlie Daniels Lynyrd Skynyrd Often though, you can find Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, etc. mixed in, among others. Josh VanderMeer Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 the funny thing about dave mustaine getting kicked out of metallica is that mustaine has had hard feelings about that, and he wanted to be faster harder and more thrashy then metallica. If u listen to the song mechanix by megadeth, it is a way more faster harder version of The four horsemen, which is off of the kill em all album, and they are both almost the exact same song except for a few differences. That always gave me a chuckle. Quote
Fish Man Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 yea but i believe that most of his conflicts have been resolved over the past few years since he found religion..made a big change in his lifesince then Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Heavy metal by choice I'll listen to just about anything though. Â Just got to be in the right mood for some of it. Quote
Guest avid Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 bluegrass. can't comment about the Dillards, and would love to check out your band. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are great. Bill Monroe is plum pickin' crrrrrrrrrrazzzy. Like Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers? Not exactly bluegrass, but I'll bet your band would enjoy playing some of their tunes. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted February 1, 2008 Super User Posted February 1, 2008 I own a ton of music and I have played a ton of music on guitar, from classical to heavy metal. Â Like Avid stated there is great music among a number of genre's though I tend to listen to more progressive rock and heavier sounding music from all decades from now back to the 60's. Â There are a number of popular bands in a number of genres whose talent leaves much to be desired. Â This band has talent out the yin-yang: Â Dream Theater. Â Many of you probably haven't heard them but they've been making albums since 1989 and have produced 9 studio albums as well as some EPs and a number of live albums. Â Their second album, Images and Words, went Gold it's first year but their label never gave them any support due to the fact that their music is incredibly complex and doesn't fit the popular music paradigm of today. Â They still sell 300,000 - 400,000 of every album by touring to support them. Â If you like music that requires technique, compositional ability, and talent and runs the gamut from gentle to metal, jazz to headbanging, you need to give them a listen. Â If you're looking for two to four minute songs with simple hooks this is not your band. Â That's not to say I don't like songs with simple hooks because there are many great simple songs that are composed well. Â But this music goes places where most bands don't dare to tread. Â Quote

Fish Man Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Senile1 ive heard of dream theatre and they are pretty good. found out about them from watching head bangers ball on MTV2 Quote
Masshole Mike Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 been huuuuuge into dragonforce lately. they shred with the best of them. straight up metal with some epic solo's. their song "through the fire and flames" is featured on guitar hero 3 as a "secret song" deal. probably the hardest GH song ever. http://www.dragonforce.com/main.html http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7326510 listen to "the fury of the storm", about 3:30 in is one of the gnarliest solo's i've ever heard. it's like 4 minutes of straight shred. other than that it's been: the red chord between the buried and me premonitions of war gym class heroes lynyrd skynyrd a life once lost cave in europe (final countdown baby!) dr. dre 311 and way too much more to list right now. mostly metal with some old school rap, some funk, some hippy jam band stuff... little bit of everything mixed in on my ipod. Super User senile1 Posted February 3, 2008 Super User Posted February 3, 2008 RedneckRiot27 and Josh Vandermeer: It's nice to hear of some people who like Dream Theater. Â I've mentioned them on rare occasions over the past couple of years and I can't remember if anyone has ever mentioned liking them. Â Their music does require an intense listening experience which many aren't in to. Â And hearing one of their songs really doesn't tell you what the band is like because they play such a wide range of styles. Â Josh, "A Change of Seasons" is awesome though my favorite album is Scenes From a Memory. Â Quote
