4pwr Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Looks like Gander Mt is back in the catalog business again. Do they have the resources to go mano, mano with Cabella's and Bass Pro? Sure would like to see some competition. Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 back in the catalog business? Thats the first I have heard of this, take a look at their website...they may as well just have a one page website that says "we got some huntin and fishing stuff, come to the store and see" The two stores I go to both are in desperate need of some upkeep...I see them going under or selling out long before they send me another catalog Quote
Olebiker Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 From the Gander Mountain Web site: What ever happened to the Gander Mountain catalog? Gander Mountain sold its catalog business in April of 1996, and the buyer subsequently closed it down. At the same time, retail operations were sold to Holiday Companies. We are sorry, but Gander Mountain no longer carries a catalog of its products. We are, however, adding new store locations all the time. Visit our Store Locator there may be a new store near you. Can I order Gander Mountain merchandise on-line? We are working toward entering the direct selling business and look forward to selling hunting, fishing and camping products on our website in the future. Unfortunately we don't offer on-line merchandise or catalog sales at this time. Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 They have already declared bankruptcy once, in 2003 I believe and are taking anothe stab at keeping the company afloat, but to be honest I'm just waiting for that going out of business sale. I dont see them doing anything to attract customers/business/income. Quote
fooman Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Thier catalog buissness was sold to Cabelas years ago and at that time I believe they entered into agreemant not to do catalogs for so many years.. They also just bought Overton's boating so I do not know what lies in store for that catalog Quote
tipptruck1 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 I sure hope gander dosn't go under. We don't have a bass pro or cabelas near me. If there having huge peoblems how come they built a bigger gander were I live. I don't think they have more stock. It was just a little crowed in the other one. All I see is more camping and hunting stuff. Plus like the back half is full of boats and atvs. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 29, 2008 Super User Posted January 29, 2008 I always thought Gander Mountain was somehow involved with BPS. The Gander Mountain by me carries Tracker/Nitro Boats, their soft plastic is similar, and their house brand jeans are exactly like BPS' minus the name. But they do carry YoZuri Hybrid Ultra Soft, which I have never seen at BPS. One things for sure the Gander Mountain by me very rarely has a sale on anything I want to buy. I don't mind shopping there but I am always able to find better prices someplace else. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted January 29, 2008 Super User Posted January 29, 2008 The problem with the Gander Mountain near me is they down sized the fishing department. They are also slow to get any of the new products into the store. Believe it or not, I've had more success getting fishing gear at Dick's. Is it Spring yet? Falcon Quote

Falcon Same here when it comes to getting new products. I have been going to Dicks. My Gander Mountain still has the Shimano Stradics at regular price and no news on getting the new ones in. Also, they a real old Shimano Stella that is also the old regular price. I don't get it. Also, if you live in the Indy area check out a bait shop called Anglers World. They carry everything new you can immagine. From Megabass to G. Loomis, they have all kinds of stuff I have never seen at Dicks or Gander Mountain. Quote
FishingBuds Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 they just built and opened one in Nov 2007 near me, I'm not familiar with them, so its the first for me here. Guns are way outta price, too high Fishen stuff is killer, bigger than Dicks by us. Quote
CGH Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 The Gander Mt. near me is in disarray also and it's always empty (of people, shoppers). They have lots of sales people on the floor but they are not in any big hurry to help you when you get their, and the prices seam way out of my reach. My bait monkey prefers BPS and Academy But like a buzzard in the sky I'm also just waiting for that going out of business sale. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted January 29, 2008 Super User Posted January 29, 2008 I've been to the one in Greensboro a couple of times. First time in there, I was browsing the gun department. Picked up a 700BDL, d**n near shat myself when I saw the pricetag. Quote
Big T Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Last summer they opened up a store in Fayetteville. Looked like they remodeled an exisiting building. However, when we got to the store we notice a huge 10 x 30 ft hole in the side of the building. Must have ran out of money or something. TS Quote
Replica. Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 High prices, poor customer service, MSRP on discontinued products, sounds like the Gander Mountain near me. Quote
Fish Man Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 its the only good fishing and hunting store around here, if they went under id be in major trouble. however the one here is very well kept and has tons of bussiness and their costomer service/prices are very good Quote

Tpayneful Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 The Gander Mountain in Fredericksburg, VA does a terrible job restocking throughout the year. They stock up the fresh water department over winter and they forget about it the rest of the year. When lures go out of stock they move existing stock around to fill in blank pegs. From June on you have to find another place to buy stuff because they will be out of stock. Quote

luckyinkentucky Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 they just built and opened one in Nov 2007 near me, I'm not familiar with them, so its the first for me here. Guns are way outta price, too high Fishen stuff is killer, bigger than Dicks by us. You must live in Evansville. ;D I love the Evansville Gander Mountain. They have just the right amount of stuff, and their prices beat the socks off of Bass Pro in Clarksville hands down. Quote
BassChaser57 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I read in a trade publication that Gander Mountain bought Cabelas some time ago and were doing well. I was shocked to read that and wonder if they had it backwards? I will go back and attempt to find the article to share with the thread. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 30, 2008 Super User Posted January 30, 2008 They're planning on opening a new store in my town in an old Kmart building sometime this spring. Quote
fooman Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Gander Mountain wins marketing rights in legal wrangle with Cabela's The United States District Court of Minnesota has granted Gander Mountain Co. the rights to the Gander Mountain name and certain trademarks in direct marketing that have been contested since Cabela's Inc. bought Gander Mountain's catalog business in 1996. As a result, Gander plans to push ahead into catalog and online sales. Gander Mountain, an outdoor sports and recreation retailer, comes out on top in the latest ruling, but Cabela's might not be finished with its legal options. Cabela's, No. 80 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, believes the ruling is contrary to the agreement that was entered into by Cabela's and Gander Mountain in 1996 when Cabela's bought Gander Mountain's catalog division and acquired the rights to Gander Mountain's trademarks in direct marketing. Cabela's is currently reviewing the ruling and discussing its alternatives with legal counsel, the company says. One alternative is to appeal the ruling. While Cabela's and its legal counsel are disappointed in the ruling, Cabela's remains optimistic regarding any further litigation in this matter, the company says. Cabela's is a multi-channel retailer also serving the outdoor recreation market. Gander Mountain intends to pursue a similar strategy, says Mark Baker, Gander Mountain president and CEO. Gander Mountain was the first major catalog company in our industry, Baker says. We now have the freedom to regain that position, and with our upcoming entry into online selling, we have significant new opportunities to leverage the Gander Mountain brand. He expects the company's retail store total to reach 115 in 23 states by the end of the year. Quote
