Super User burleytog Posted January 6, 2008 Super User Posted January 6, 2008 TheBeast and I were thinking about wetting a line today. After a week of the coldest weather of the season, the end of deer season, and a general malaise, a few hours on the water would be a welcome respite. After hitting the local enabler yesterday (bought the last of their Silver Buddies ), we decided to a little recon. Hit a couple of ponds first, both frozen solid. > Headed over to the town reservoir (site of last January's trip from hell), not only was it frozen over, it was also down about 7' from where it was in October. We couldn't even launch a boat there if we wanted to. The ramp is completely out of the water. If we don't get quite a bit of rain over the next 3-4 months, tournament season might be in danger. Starting to miss my easy-to-launch jonboat now. :'( Might have to register the canoe so I can put the TM on it. More recon today, have a couple more ponds and lakes to check out. Quote
John J. Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 that sucks. We are going to get some warm temperatures tomorrow, tue and wed. Monday they are calling for a high of 68, tue high of like 71 and wed back down to like 65. Hopefully those warm days will help out. When we had the drought over the summer our pond and local lakes were down by like 4 foot or more. But since November rains have come through, everything is filled back up. But in your case it looks like the optimum opportunity to go ice fishing! Quote
Super User burleytog Posted January 6, 2008 Author Super User Posted January 6, 2008 I made it a foot onto the ice before it cracked. I guess it takes more than 3 days of subfreezing temperatures to make safe ice. Quote
Super User Micro Posted January 6, 2008 Super User Posted January 6, 2008 Yeah, Little Creek Reservoir in James City County, VA is down 9 feet, and that's up from being down 11 feet 2 months ago. It's been closed to fishing since October. Vast flocks of ducks have taken a liking to it, though. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted January 6, 2008 Author Super User Posted January 6, 2008 This is the lake back in May. Same point in the first photo I posted. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted January 6, 2008 Super User Posted January 6, 2008 Wow! I never seen a frozen lake in person before. Or snow, but that lake looks like time is standing still. Quote
CGH Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Burley = yelruB Reverse Global Warming = Global Freezing Quote
John J. Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Reverse Global Warming = Global Freezing aka Ice Age! Hopefully with these warmer temperatures that are about to hit us, they will thaw the lake. You could probably do what russ did last year: Break the ice with the boat, paddle Quote
Thefishy1 Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 At least you could go around and find or plant some brushpiles for when spawning season comes Quote
