'Hearty Eater' Claims Buffet Banned Him

HOUMA, La. (Jan. 3) - A 6-foot-3, 265-pound man says a restaurant overcharged him for his trips to the buffet line, then banned him and a relative because they're hearty eaters. A spokesman for the restaurant denies the claim.

Ricky Labit, a disabled offshore worker, said he had been a regular for eight months at the Manchuria Restaurant in Houma, eating there as often as three times a week.

On his most recent visit, he said, a waitress gave him and his wife's cousin, 44-year-old Michael Borrelli, a bill for $46.40, roughly double the buffet price for two adults.

"She says, 'Y'all fat, and y'all eat too much,"' Labit said.

Labit and Borrelli said they felt discriminated against because of their size. "I was stunned, that somebody would say something like that. I ain't that fat, I only weigh 277," Borrelli said, adding that a waitress told him he looked like he a had a "baby in the belly."

Houma accountant Thomas Campo said the men were charged an extra $10 each on Dec. 21 because they made a habit of dining exclusively on the more expensive seafood dishes, including crab legs and frog legs.

"We have a lot of big people there," said Campo, who spoke for owner Li Shang, whose English is limited. "We don't discriminate."

Labit denied ever being told he would be asked to pay more than the standard adult price.

The argument grew heated, and police were called.

The police report states, "The incident was settled when the management advised that the bill was a mistake and, to appease Ricky, the meal was complimentary."

Labit said he insisted on paying but was told not to come back. He complained that when seafood on the buffet line runs out, the restaurant only grudgingly cooks more.

Campo said the proprietress tries to reduce waste of quality food, he said.

"Food is for eating, not toys for your child," reads a sign posted on a wall in typewritten text. A handwritten addition reads "Or 20% added."

Wow... It's not a all you can eat buffet if there is a limit you can eat until you have to pay more.

I remember like a year or 2 ago same thing happend but to a family at a  buffet. A family would eat like 1/10th of there dish throw out the food and get more. They were kicked out. They tried to sue because they were "Humiliated" I think but they failed hard.

Come on Sam, you're better than that shiz...  ::)

Have you not seen the whale patrolling the sidelines for Kansas?  That alone makes Phil Fulmer's weight a non-issue.

Besides, Fulmer has lost quite a bit of weight over the last 2-3 years and isn't much bigger than your golden boy Les 'Dumbasrocks' Miles.

Yes, you are totally correct.

But it is fun tweeking the UT fans.

And what about Charlie Wiess of Notre Dame.

I don't think he has passed up a buffet in a long, long time.

Glad you are back on line.

Charlie has to have a custom made belt, and that is coming from an ND fan.  Although I may be a little disgruntled after this season :'(

He couldn't have been too fat.  I'm 6'2" and I weigh around 245 lbs.  I'm far from overweight!  if he was 6' 3" and 270 he might be a little on the heavy side, but far from obese.

I think the moment the waitress called him fat, that would have been the end of it for me.

I may very well be in jail should such an incident occur.   ;)

Weight isnt the issue, if the sign says all you can eat for a certain price then you can eat all you can for that price. I've heard of this happening many times, it happened to my dad and his friend at a china buffet. They ate for about an hour and the manager made them leave becuase "they ate too much". I wouldnt leave until i had ate all i could eat

I've heard of people trying to stay the whole day.Eating 4-6 hours with an hour or so breaks. I find that wrong.

Well then the sign should read "all you can eat in an hour" ;D

Once in LA, we went to a place like that when I was in college and 2 of my guy friends were a little over weight.... ok, they were heavy guys and the lady told us that my two friends could not eat there. >:(
