Fishing Doug Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 So what's the deal with you Missouri guys calling the state "Missurruh"? Any of you Missourians not pronounce it that way? No. I pronounce it correctly. I have lived in MO my entire life and still unsure of why people cannot pronounce it correct. Retardation, I assume. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 Yes, perhaps it's retardation. The only reason I can think of as to why the "Missurruh" may have started is that "Missouri" sounds kinda like "misery", and maybe some folks didn't like that... It always cracks me up when someone says "I'm from Misserruh!" Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 I believe is a southern slang pronunciation. Like Yall, Fixin, Yonder and so forth. Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 I've just always called it "that state up there right above us". That way I don't have to worry about saying it correctly. Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted January 2, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted January 2, 2008 Why do some people pronounce Washington, "Worshington" ? THERE'S NO "R"! Quote
Super User senile1 Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 No one is retarded. Both pronunciations of Missouri are correct. See link below. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/missouri Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 I grew up in Missour "uh" (the Kansas City area). My wife is from Missour "ee" (the St. Louis area). We both graduated from THE University of Missour-RAH! (Missour-Rah, Missour-Rah, Missour-Rah, TIGERS!) These are the same Tigers who put a whoopin' on R-Kansas yesterday in the Cotton Bowl! Quote

I hate to admit it but it was a genuine whoopin'! I almost wish we could have traded bowls with you. We probably could have beaten R-kansas. Quote

Troutfisher Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Why do some people pronounce Washington, "Worshington" ? THERE'S NO "R"! My Grandpa says that all the time, it drives us crazy. Quote
Guest avid Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Why do some people pronounce Washington, "Worshington" ? THERE'S NO "R"! Just the opposite for New Yorkers. There IS an "R" but you'll never a native new yorker pronounce it. Na Yawk is where I was born. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 I was born in Miss-zor-ree, so that makes me a hillbilly coonass Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 According to my english teacher friend there is no correct pronunciation for a proper noun. Example I used to work for guy in New Orleans whose last name was "RICHARD" (Rich ard) he would kill you. He was a proud cajun (french canadian) it's pronounced (Reee shard) or he would kill you. He really wasn't violent. JM 2 cents. Ronnie Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted January 2, 2008 Author Posted January 2, 2008 There's another one - New Orleans My uncle lives there and calls it "New Allins" Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 That would be Nawlins. Quote
