crazy4bass1 Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 i was watching a program last night and it was saying what the most deadliest sports where and guess what was number one fishing i guess its from all the crazy crab fishers in alaska dying but still thats a little bit scary Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I think you mean deadliest job not sport . Quote
Guest avid Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 interesting question, so I googled it. Fishing is on the list of top 10. Apparantly surf casting in Australia is called "rock fishing" and about 15 guys each year, get swept away and killed by big waves. the deadliest are the base jumpers. they are the guys who will parachute off of anything not moving. Super User Long Mike Posted December 29, 2007 Super User Posted December 29, 2007 Avid, that's why I've been nagging you to give up base jumping. You've already screwed up both shoulders from pulling those silly stunts. ;D ;D ;D Quote
Other. Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Parkour and Free Running hands down. I do Parkour right now and after I get a little more comfortable with it I will move into free running. Here are some videos of Parkour. This is why Parkour is deadly. People do not analyze were they are going to land when they are jumping or forget to roll when they jump from a height like this. http://my.break.com/content/view.aspx?ContentID=194247 I am surprised this kid was able to get up and walk again. http://my.break.com/content/view.aspx?ContentID=413187 Of course I do not do anything that intense YET my knees will probably give up though before I ever build up enough courage to do a back flip off a 10 foot wall. But maybe I don't know maybe my dream of being a hardcore parkour/free runner may come true (probably won't though) This happens to be a really good video to show what great people can do! http://my.break.com/content/view.aspx?ContentID=143391 Quote

RobbyZ5001 Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Anime Other I am presuming you are not spiderman. Who in the right mind tries to jump from building to building? I will stick to my extreme sport which is jumping out of airplanes and I get a soft landing none of this tuck and roll nonsense. Quote
Kimbro Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Anime, those guys are some seriously athletic individuals. My hats off to them. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted December 29, 2007 Super User Posted December 29, 2007 The last words of many a Parkour and Free Runner and dummy "Hey, Ya'll watch this." I will tell you from my experiance here in the trauma center where I work. Hard serfaces are very unforgiving. Spines break, necks aren't indistructable and wheelchairs are still being made every day. Don't be stupid. Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 29, 2007 Super User Posted December 29, 2007 I would think you would have to define the meaning of "sports" when asking this question. For example, is auto racing a sport? Is fishing actually a sport? Are chess and checkers sports? Are Parkour and Free Running considered sports? Once you define what a "sport" is to be then you can make a valid comparison. And LBH is correct in his statement that some of the "sports" are actually careers or jobs and they should not be included in the statistics. In addition, should we include "injuries to participants" or the "death rates" that each sport produces over the past five to ten years as our markers? Football would win the injuries while auto racing, parachuting, mountain climbing, hiking and hunting would probably lead in deaths. I know of two very dangerous situations while bass fishing. 1. Falling out of the boat into cold water; and 2. Having a serious medical condition while fishing by yourself. In the new BPS catalog there are emergency distress messengers that I would think we all should have with us when fishing. Check out page 449 in the new BPS catalog. I may get one. I just love these new toys! Quote

The youth of today is dumber than I thought. Anyone doing this is one jump away from clearing the gene pool of one less piece of DNA that shouldn't be passed on. Quote

Anyone doing this is one jump away from clearing the gene pool of one less piece of DNA that shouldn't be passed on. People used to say these things about us when we skied. Jumping off cliffs, etc,....it looks sick but is all a calculated risk. My point is the term "sport" which implies that people do these things in a competitive arena. This stuff is a "hobby", not a sport. Just as "commercial fishing" is career, not a sport. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted December 29, 2007 Super User Posted December 29, 2007 Well, after watching those videos, I don't think parkour is sport as much as it is a "death wish". Falcon Quote

Then the parents(Or parent) can make an educated guess if they want to continue with the... Really. I pity any parent who would wind up having to care for a quadrapalegic or brain damaged child due to the stupidity of doing any of these kinds of stunts. Incredible. I wonder how much of this lunacy isn't brought about by the emergence of You Tube as a means to bring attention to ones self? I thought smacking my 18 year old upside his head was sufficient recently when he and another kid purposely sprayed pepper spray into their faces on PURPOSE in order to video it. : Then I watch these kids and I'm thankful that's all he did. Other. Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Well I guess I will have to defend Parkour. Its really not that bad. As I said as long as you do not try to do anything you know you can't do then don't do it. If you analyze were you will hit the ground and roll you will be alright. It's people who try to do the speedy stuff were they jump before they think of what they are going to do. Maybe If I can learn how to just do some basic flips I will make a video to show you guys that its really not that dangerous. Only idiots that jump a jump they can't do or do not analyze before they jump get hurt. It's sort of like skydiving You have to succeed practice before you can go large scale. No one just jumps off a plane with out even learning how to pull open a parachute. Sadly parkourist have not figured this out yet. Parkour is actually really fun. Parkour done wrong http://my.break.com/content/view.aspx?ContentID=387902 Parkour done right (And safely) http://my.break.com/content/view.aspx?ContentID=210915 Those guys are actually really good. Super User Long Mike Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 AnimeOther, it is a scientific fact that the brain of a person your age has not matured to the point that you are capable of the realization that you REALLY CAN DIE OR BECOME PERMANENTLY DISABLED from pulling STUPID stunts like yours. I am so grateful that I am not one of your parents. If you die, they will have lost a beloved son. If you are permanently disabled then you will become a burden on everyone. So if you decide to pull these STUPID stunts, make sure that if you fail, you kill yourself. On the other hand, you could take up any number of other sports that are much less likely to cause you harm, such as bass fishing. Have you tried it lately? Quote
Super User Root beer Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 I dont personally care for parkour. Although I'd admit some of these guys probably got endurance of a marathon runner which makes them athelete. Long mike, every day you get in a car you can die right? So is it stupid to get in a car knowing you can die? Everything we do can kill us. Whether we are acting stupid or acting fully mature. People are always going to be this way. There really nothing you can do to stop it. I'm sure back your days there was probably even more stupid people we just didnt have videos of it because of technology. I have spoken! Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 Long mike, every day you get in a car you can die right? So is it stupid to get in a car knowing you can die? That whole "You can die in a car" argument is tired and old. All sports carry with them some kind of risk. There are people earning a ton of money looking to prevent the next concussion in football or the next torn rotator cuff in baseball. There are also people out there trying to prevent you from dying in an auto accident by making cars more resistant to impacts from other vehicles or objects. Stay in school, learn something (grammar ;D) become successful and watch all the Darwin nominees try to out-do each other. I, too, have spoken : Quote
