I was wondering why would you use a soft plastic frog vs. a normal frog like a SPRO or a Bobby's Perfect Frog? I ordered a Zoom horny toad kit and it is on backorder should I just wait till it comes or should I get some SPRO or Bobby's Perfect Frogs?

the zoom horny toad is usualy kept in motion and is used kind of like a buzzbait. personaly, i prefer a buzzbait.

the spro frog is a better buy. throw it on surface slime and jerk it super gently with loooooooong pauses. once you get to the edge, wait for as long as you can stand it with just the tip of the frogs nose sticking off the edge, then twitch it out to open water and you'll usualy get good strikes like that

I fish both types of baits. Soft plastic frogs like the Horny Toad have a buzzing action from the feet and can be stopped and let to sink down into the cover.  Floating frogs only float and can be fished very slowly over cover and are more weedless.

IMO, you should have both.

My favorites are the Bronzeye Jr. and the Cane Toad.

fish the zoom horny toad around sparse cover and through the SPRO bronzeeye in the thickest cover you can find and up against banks or around a large patch of stumps

IMO its 2 different styles of fishing.  The hollow frog (spro) is a stop and go through anything.  You can even get the frog to jump over hurdles.

The horney toad is basically a soft bait that works somewhat like a buzzbait.  if it sits still it will sink.  Works best with the slowest retrieve keeping the bait on top.

I personally feel like the Horny Toad works best when fished sub-surface.  I'd rather use a hollow frog on top or a buzzbait before I would a horny toad.

The best strikes I have had on top with a horny toad are when the legs are not making much of a ruckus at all.....verryyyyy quiet, just stirring the water, no splashing.  Its a more intense strike than a top water hit on a pop-r or whatever because everythings so silent..its awesome, especially if you can see the mouth coming up to get the bait.

The best solid body frog I've ever tried is the Sizmic Pop'N Toad, that lure is an explosion in top of the water and since it floats you are always in action. Big fish love it, last year I landed 28 fish on them, none under 2 lbs, the last one as late as 11/17.

Highly recommend

I prefer fishing a soft-plastic frog like a Stanley Ribbit and buzzing it across the surface. This is because I suck at setting the hook with those big hollow frogs, I have probably missed or lost 80% of the fish that have hit my Spro Bronzeye frog, so I'm gonna stick with the Ribbits for now.

simple: soft plastic frogs like the horny toad, cane, and the others, sink. the hollow bodied frogs like the swamp donkey, spro and the others float. here in florida, sometimes bass want a frog that is moving, but sometimes they want a frog that is stationary. jmo. trick is finding which one they want.

My vote is for the bronzeye, i started fishing them this year and absolutely love them. Nothing to rig up like the zoom just tie on and fish.

I like the Bobby's Perfect Frogs it is a darn good frog! I throw a sumo frog if I want a large profile frog also. The topwater frogs that float are more for slow rat fishing but can be spooked or fished stop and go. Most of the soft plastic frogs are either used as buzzbaits or can be used as a pitch bait. Most of the soft plastic frogs sink.

try the basirisky frog, it can be used as a buzzbait type lure and on surface algea. it's kinda both, and it's worth trying. when used like a buzzbait it will rock side to side and gurgle kind of like a jitterbug.

I'm partial to soft-plastic topwaters like the Sizmic Toad and Cane Toad.

They're weedless and since they're soft they are more mouthable than hard plastics.

I guess I too am in the minority in that I like the snag proof "Bobby's perfect frog" over the spro for hollow body frogs. For soft frogs I have tried the yum buzz frog, the zoom horny toad, and the sizmic toad. I have decided i like the horny toad the best and buy/use them exclusivly now. As far when do I fish each type.........I like the hollow body frog over top of lilly pads, and other really nasty mats of slop. I'll drag it from pad to pad , kill it and shake it in open water between the pads/mats. The blow ups on these frogs is breath taking, I found if you wait a few seconds, reel down till you feel resistance on the line then really "crack the whip" on them hooking percentage goes way way up with these frogs............in fact I might not have missed on more than a handfull of the bass I caught with this frog last summer. As for the horny toads I like them in clear water as a buzzbait, I also like to swim then ovwer top of milfoil that has grown up to the surface and then kill it and let it fall in to holes. The black horny toad was my #1 night time top water bait last year. i also plan to experiment with using it as a jig trailer this year.

I use the softbody frog in water that is less weedy. By this I mean some weeds here and there and here and there. Not COMPLETELY weeds like ponds can get. I feel the buzzfrog is just a better frog for this condition because 1. Its very soft and the hook set is very reliable. 2. The frog being fished like a buzz is deadly. 3. No hollow frog can imitate the gurgling and swimming action of a buzzfrog. Although I will use hollowfrogs on areas of ALL weeds, by this I mean the frog is ontop of slop and there are weeds almost everywhere. This is because the frog is completely weedless and the fish seem to love it slowly draging/pausing across the weed tops
