I must be one of the world's biggest insomniacs. I can't just lay down and go to sleep like my wife. Too many gears turning in my head to do that. I usually get about 2-3 hours sleep most weeknights and 3-5 on the weekend nights. Anybody else do this? I don't really want to rely on a pill to put me to sleep but that may be my only option. What do you guys do when you can't sleep other than spend time on BR reading like me?

I know you're not going to believe this but that is what I just had...weird.

Sleep is such a waste of time I think.  Too much to do in the world.

I work in a sleep labso my job is to watch people at night and figure out what is wrong with there sleep.  I see a few insomnia patients a month and the one thing that the Dr here at the lab has tokd me that most insomnia is a learned behavior.  The best way to fix it is to get your body in a routine that triggers it to want to go to sleep.

The exercise he uses most is one of the dumbest sounding things I have heard but people we have talked to says it works.

You set on the edge of the bed and close your eyes. Then repeat over and over "I am ready to go to sleep" or "It is time to go to sleep".

You do it about 10 to 20 times while pointing at your left temple then your right temple.  Then you lay down get comfortable and don't move.  In your head you keep repeating which ever one you say till you go to sleep.

Sounds crazy but I have talked to Patients that say it takes one time saying it now and they go right to sleep. ;)

I used to have that problem until I found out my need for a nightly routine.

I go to bed around 1 a.m., and get up around 9 a.m. for work at 10.  When I lay my head down at night I have a clear head, and a clear conscience.  It does help to have the t.v. on with the sleep timer set to 30 minutes.  I usually hit 'TV Land' and something like Andy Griffith or Leave it to Beaver is on.   ;D   A pair of wireless headphones helps if you can't turn the volume up too loud.  Ninety percent of the time I wake up a few hours later, and take them off, but I fall right back to sleep and rarely remember doing this.    The wife doesn't care, and she rarely notices the light in the room from the tv for the 30 minutes it is on.

Also, PB&J and a glass of milk or hot chocolate helps me as well.

In response to eastkybass ...

I totally agree it is a learned behavior.  I think it all started a few years ago in college when I would worked at a bar til 2 am 4 or 5 nights a week and then I would have to come home to study for an 8 am class.  Spent many days that semester watching the sun come up.  It seems that's when my problem started and continued even when I wasn't keeping that work/school schedule.

My condition (if that's what you want to call it) has seen drastic improvements over the past 3 months or so though.  I started forcing myself to stick to a schedule.  It was tough for about a week, but then it slowly but surely started working.

I'm not sleepy now, but I sure am laughing real hard.    I'll change it when I can fish again.  Just fits my mood right now with winter and cabin fever.

eastkybass and luckyinkentucky,  thanks for the advice.  I will give it a try.

I wish I could go to sleep my bio 110 teacher decided two give us two tests on finals day! >:( My final is Friday but this material is ridiculous! So now he gets to ruin my entire week of drinking and making bad decisions!

*Edit* I feel bad for Insomniacs. I absolutely love sleep couple years ago I worked a legit first shift job and have respected sleep ever since. One thing I do when I cant fall asleep is read. Puts me out!

Yep. I work 7pm to 7 am 3-4 days a week, so my sleep is all messed up. On top of that durning tournament season I'm up at 3-5am to fish every day off. I usually go about a week with only a few hours of sleep a night or day, then will sleep really well for a night.

I don't know how you guys can function on only a few hours. Anything under 8 and Im walking with my arms straight out. b-b-b-brains

I use to have that problem, I ended up having to run a fan or a machine I have beside my bed that sounds like the ocean. These help a whole lot. But I can tell you the older you get the easier it gets to go to bed. ;D I'm talking 8 o'clock and you are out of there. Ain't no need to even think about Monday night football, because it will be the next day before you know who won the game

I used to have it bad. My cure is not one I'd ever recommend. After the heart attack, I started taking prescribed beta blockers. They make me sleep like a baby.

Except for the thumb-sucking, and crapping in the pants part.

I go through periods where I do not sleep well. It usually last around 2 to 3 weeks. This past week has been one of them. I go to sleep but I wake up every hour or two through the night. When I do get to sleep I toss and turn. The doctor gave me something for it, Lunesta. It works and I do not think it is very addictive. I am out of it right now, I may have to make a trip to my family physician for some more.

I have the exact opposite problem. I don't have any problems getting to sleep sometimes I have problems waking up in the mornings. It hasn't been as big a problem in the last few years but I still have problems not feeling rested when I do get up. Doesnt matter how many hrs of sleep I get. I suspect it's sleep apnea but have never been tested.

My sympathies go out to anyone who can't sleep.  But please stay out from behind the wheel of a car!  My brother in law doesn't get enough sleep and he creamed his mailbox with his car as a result (he fell asleep going up the driveway.  He was very lucky that's all he did.

No problems falling asleep normally just wake up a ton of times.(stressed)  Bendryl works well at knocking you out though if you need some sleep just don't take it all the time. Its for allergies but works great as a sedative :)
