You should understand that Winkpedia is the lamest source of info on the internet, it is totally unacceptable to site as a source when doing college or reseach work, as its editorial methods are highly suspect To the best of my knowledge it snuck into the everyday language as a miscue in the Honeymooners. Ralph was to call Norton a MAUX ( a lazy kind of shiftless person) in an episode and he pronounced it MOOK. The people of Brooklyn kind of first embraced the word, as a funny, silly oor goofy action or person. What are you a Mook? Years later in a scene in Martin Sorcese's Mean Streets there is a brawl in a pool hall, involving Robert DiNero and Harvey Kietel, who owe a Bookie considerable money and don't have it. The bookies name in the scene is named Paulie and he has a gorilla/collector with him and the both start to beat on DiNero and Keitel. The Gorilla has Keitel by the neck and Keitel has him by the neck and he calls the Gorilla a MOOK the next line became a Brooklyn favorite" Hey You can't call me a MOOK, Hey Paulie WHAT"S A MOOK" The genius of the scene is in the backround in an overhead TV , that episode of the Honeymooners is in frame! From there on, in Mostly Italian neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Mine South Brooklyn being one of the oldest and largest, MOOK BECAME A GENERIC NAME MEANING MANY THINGS< DEPENDING ON HOW ITS USED AND THE INFLECTION USED WHILE SAYIN IT! Naturally Winkepedia would post that it's a MAFIA SAYING because as we all know all Italians are in the Mafia or know someone who is! GGEEZZZ!!!!!, gimme a break Now if you see an average joe on the street you would greet him " Waht's up Mook It can be used to decribe unskilled labor; As Constuction Job starting needed; 2 structural steel workes a few carpenters and 2 Mooks, again not a degroatory word but descibing labor intense work such as carting stuff to and from the skilled workers It can describe something stupid, funny or badluck Ive Been Mooked That was a real mook move If you stay on the front porch ( a stoop in Bklyn) and gossip all day you would be the neighborhood STOOP MOOK A Lawyer or Business type SUIT MOOK So thats the best and not complete usage of the word So please before you judge us, know that we use the word a lot in jest, frequently affectionate and my team is known as TWO MOOKS IN A BOAT and we started a goffy kind of club around here known as MOOKS GONE WILD and many of us wear tshirts made for members with pride 8-) Quote
