Just wondering how you guys feel about holiday tipping.  Less and less people tip their UPS driver each yr.  Don't get me wrong, not everyone should.  There are customers that we deal with every day and others we just deliver to once in awhile.

many drivers go out of their way to accommodate the customers throughout the yr, these folks are different.  Some drivers used to pick their routes according to Xmas tip potential.  Some drivers would take home 3-5k in tips from some of the metro routes.

Nowadays, a basket, plate of cookies or Dunkin' Donuts gift card are much more the norm.

For those of you who take the time to pass on a $10 card or a something you made for your driver, know that it goes a long way.  I don't drive much nowadays, working in other areas of the Biz so I don't see the tips but I certainly remember from even 5 yrs ago, the customers who took the time.  It means a lot to the driver's, really makes their day to know someone gave a crap! ;)

I usually tip the pizza boy well, the mail man gets a gift card.  To be honest with you I never even thought of tipping the UPS/Fedex guys.  I hve one guy delivering lots of stuff this year, and he usually stops to shoot the S$%t for a while. Guess I will give him 20 spot next time to make up for it all.

I don't think I have or ever will tip my UPS driver.  He still owes me a mail box and a post to put it on.  Our postman on the other hand, gets cookies, coffee or whatever else the wife cooks up on the holidays.  I do tip a little more when we go out to eat.

The one that makes me steaming mad though, is our newspaper delivery guy.  He has a normal job, nice house and a big SUV but delivers the paper to our neighborhood for extra cash.  Every year we get a card in the mail from them saying how they need extra money for the holidays and to please inclose a check for one the following amounts: $20, $50, or $100.  The amounts are even printed on the card with check boxes next them.  Needless to say, I have never given to these people.

I always tip well to whomever,  If they have went out of there way to really help me or serve me then I wouldn't feel right not tipping them.   I didn't know UPS and Fedex was allowed to take tips.  I know now.   To me it should be year round not just at Christmas.   If someone has went out of there way to do something for me they should be tipped.

My UPS driver gets a tip because he knows to put any boxes from Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Performance Bike, or Colorado Cyclist on the back porch...  hidden on the back side of the chimney... out of sight of SWMBO.

Russ,  I don't think I've ever thought of that.  We don't get that many packages from them though.  Most of the time, they've gone before we can get to the door.  I guess if I was in some kind of business and saw them regularly, I might tip them (at least with some goodies or something around holidays).

We have given some goodies to our mailman before and given cold Dr. Peppers to the garbage men on a hot day.  I guess that counts for something.

Thanks for bringing up the topic.

I usually get a case of candy 2 lb boxes, or quarts of real maple syrup to hand out to some of my clients & friends at church. My UPS man John always gets one with a thank you card. He delivers to me 10 times a year or so, but he is top notch and friendly.

I should have been more specific.  80% of the situations, the driver shouldn't get a tip, BUT ,...there are certain relationships that do warrant one.  There are businesses that we pick up from every day.  The one that ALWAYS asks if you can come back (and you ALWAYS do) should tip you.  Even if you have gotten good service all year, tip the guy.  again, these are people who see each other EVERY day.

There are lots of different scenarios, but if you get something from UPS/Fedex, 2,3,5 times a year, don't even consider giving a tip.

Then,....there are the QVC wives,......... ::).....

I tip the mailman nice and UPS know me by name so they get a decent tip too. When i get out to eat i tip depending on the service but never less than 10% or higher than 20%.

I cant believe the amount of stuff women order from QVC, have to deal with it on our belt all day long. Just nuts. There are a few stops on my trucks that have QVC stuff everday, and I mean 8-10 packages, everyday.

Ya, I cant understand how Dunkin' stays in business with all the stuff that gets given out there. Just crazy.

tip? whats that?   ;D

I've tipped waiters/waitress', bag boys, tattoo artist, but never thought about UPS. I guess anyone that you work with on a regular basis, provides a service and goes outside of there normal duties deserves a tip.

I rarely have the same ups driver. Always seem to be changing? I do live in the sticks though. What do you guys tip the person that cuts your hair for the Holidays?

I have a UPS store by my office, and I use them alot and when I have staff meetings ( once a month), I bring in food and I call them over after the meeting and they eat with my staff. they are regulars now with us.  ;D   I didn't know about the tips but I will make sure and talk to a certain person I know that gets deliveries like 3 times a week!   ;)

That's what we like to hear. ;)  We spend a lot of time and money to get drivers that efficient.

Being a bartender I can absolutely tell you that tipping well makes a huge difference.  The bar I work for is a "regulars" kind of place, people we see every day or week, and we know who the good tippers are and who aren't.  The people who give the better tips get better service.  I know, it shouldn't be that way and everyone should be served equally, but when a guy lays down a fifty on a $30 tab and says "Keep the change," we tend to remember him and take better care of him than the guy that lays down a 10 for a $9.50 tab and says "Keep the change."  Luckilly, at the place I work, we don't have too much of this, and even if you're a lousy tipper you get excellent service.  But if I'm busy and I see the lousy tipper and the good tipper both need drinks at the same time, who do you think I'm going to serve first?  Just remember what TIPS stand for: "To Insure Prompt Service."

No wonder she has to give them away. . . I wouldn't pay for "dog-nuts" either.    ;D JK

Of course, you know I NEVER make a mistake.  ::)
