I think it is boring because of the mutual respect this forums members have for one another.  (a good thing)  I have seen these debates go really,  really bad.  I want to commend some of the younger members that have taken a look and recognized the need for improvement.  For those that attacked Long Mike (if only in fun) shame on you.   Ever heard "don't shoot the messenger?"  The truth is the truth,  fact is fact.   Writing is objective,  not subjective.  (meaning that proper writing is not up for interpretation)  Use the communication in this forum to practice your writing skills.  It will benefit you from high school through college and into the rest of your life.   :)

I half to say that Mike has given me some good advice before and I do appreciate it. I think he is a good guy and has alot of wisdom to share with the individuals that want to learn. I myself understand that the short hand gets old, sometimes I read a thread and theres alot of lol(which I understand that) but others that I dont and wish people would just take the time to spell them out. BUT I read the thread were he jumped the kid about the mounting the seats in his boat and I thought he was alittle out of line expecially after this post because he misspell some stuff and if like he said to the kid wouldnt have been so lazy as to go back and reread what he would have wrote then he would have caught what he misspelled and corrected it. I am byfar not a great speller or punctuator and am not a English teacher and never claim to be. My point is if you are going to cratec someone on something you better be ontop of your game and not make the same mistakes.

P.S. I do understand the short hand, come on guys some of us guys that dont get it and would enjoy reading your threads alot more if we could read them and understand them.

Also theres to much fishing to be talking about so lets put this behind us and talk about what this site is really about. Sorry for any misspelled words or punctuation.

                                                      Thanks FisherDave

You're kidding right? He goes on a self righteous tirade and it's shame on us? That is ridiculous.

Fourbizzle,

I read a lot of your posts and I see an educated writer.  There are so many posts (let's not even include the IM shorthand) that scream out "not learning or being taught to write correctly."  Maybe Long Mike was a little harsh but,  he's only trying to help.  I have a feeling you will change how you see this type of thing as you get older.  When you get to be 93 (like Mike ;sorry Mike)  you may feel even stronger.  I think that sometimes people need to be told they are not doing something (whatever it may be) well.  How else will they know that they need to improve?  (Everyone has room for improvement)  And,  it is never acceptable for anyone to not always try,  to do anything they are doing,  better.  Always try to better yourself no matter what you are doing!

As I said before,  this forum is a perfect place to practice writing skills.

edbassmaster....I saw your post.  Agreed!!!

First off id like to say that i agree that the shorthand is stupid but i do have a problem with every body stereotyping all teenagers as being this way.honestly most of my friends (about 90% of em) arent like that and i imagine its the same way all over and it isnt just teenagers that do it, there are plenty of peaple older and younger that do it

just my 2 cents  :)

But while we are on the subject people, ... <------- that is called an ellipsis, please use it with thrift. when there are 75 periods in a 50 word response, THAT IS ANNOYING!

I guess I'm pretty guilty of this, or you might say I elicit egregious ellipsis. But the question is, it more ANNOYING than alliteration?

You know dave, its not even that i neccesarily disagree with what mike posted. Its just that the method in which the message was delivered really rubs me the wrong way, as I imagine it does many people. I think that like anything, shorthand "chat" speak is best used in moderation. The three or four most common ones I think everyone knows and aren't really a problem. For example, lol, jmho, 2cents, etc. I also used to loathe the smilies, but you know, sometimes you need them to convey tone or intent.

I honestly can't believe there aren't more people pi$$ed off about that little tirade in which he directly insulted and belittled  a very specific group of people, citing their age as the criteria for his broad generalization.

Mostly I just do not like being told what to do by anyone that doesn't share my DNA or sign my paycheck.

I honestly don't have a thing against mike, as a matter of fact some of his DOM jokes crack me up.

If you want to help someone, or, have an issue, just send a personal message. That way we do not have to have Topics/Threads like this one.  :-X

NOW THAT IS FUNNY!

but i don't know i think  alliteration may be worse than a nuclear holocaust.

but than again, hyperbole is pretty bad too ;D

In LongMikes defence i believe he has tryed that in the past, i think i said somthing about it in one of my first posts on the thread but he politly sent me one a few months ago an i understood where he was coming from, oppologized and tryed to stop using shorthand as much..now i dont know if he has used that with other people but then again with a growing number of members on the boards it would be hard to send that many pm's  :)

you text messaging, short hand writting, low pants wearing, jungle music listening, hat sideways wearing, cell phone using, pop a cap in your a#!, having sex to young, meth making snot nose punks >:(

If that didn't offend you then, I'll make it personnal

You CAN'T FISH ;D

Now let me try it in text style

ytm,shw,lpw,jml,hsw,cpu,paciya,hsty,mmsnp >:(

That just didn't have the same affect, Hmmm?

LongMike is right Stop it, if we are to insult one another do it with class, prefer it be at least 4th grade class ;D

I will proudly say that I have NEVER sent, nor received a text message. EVER. As far as instant messages, I have only used them on some other archaic site, as there are no private messages, so I use the IMs in the same form as I use PMs on here.

What really ticked me off, is earlier this week, in English class, we had to prepare a text message conversation between two characters in the book we are reading, using standard text lingo. My teacher had to print out a sheet for me, as I honestly don't know any of it. What really causes me to blow up, is when people start TALKING to me in letters. I don't want to hear JK, when someone is telling me they are kidding.

Now, on a board like this, with the diversity of people here, we will stumble across some who really don't have the writing knowledge some of us possess. But, I can almost assure you, that if you are able to work with a computer, you know fairly well what a sentence is, and that the first letter is capitalized, and the end is punctuated.

but if the whole sentence looks like this one i am typing even if everything is spelled right and uses the correct form of each word it is totally horrible to read how do they expect me to be able to help them if i have to constantly struggle to understand what is being said.....

A simple capital letter, and period, or question mark, makes a sentence so much easier to read.

People, get a grip. Don't talk in text lingo, because I don't understand it, and I am sure most of the adult members certainly don't. Also, attempt to use correct grammar on a stupid sentence. It isn't hard, and if you TRY, I will give you credit, and try to help.

Mike, I find the irony of the mistakes in your original post quite humorous. But no, I AM NOT CRITICIZING YOU, SO DON'T PESTER ME WITH HOW YOU MADE A MISTAKE - I AM JUST POINTING OUT THAT IT WAS HUMOROUS. (Yes, I typed that in all caps intentionally. Generally, they are used to signify yelling, or a stronger attempt to get a point across)

I want to see how they write a resume for a job.  I bet you cannot read it.

You sholdn't end a sentence with it.  Like I just did.  My point is where do you draw the line.  Its a forum.  IMO ;D shorthand should be expected.  If the post is so bad that you can't even read it do you really want to know what they are saying.  It takes two seconds to start reading a post and realize it difficult to read.  Just stop.

Gentlemen, I am very pleasantly surprised that my original post started such a lively, and, in my opinion, fruitful debate.

I don't mind being called to task for my spelling errors.  After all, it was my mistake.  I'm a firm believer in the old adage "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."

Thanks to all for very valuable and informative input.  I hope this thread is read many times by those who may want to correct/improve their written communication skills.
