Super User Long Mike Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 Never again will I publically chastise any individual who chooses to post on this site who, through ignorance, laziness or stupidity, butchers our beautiful English American language. All who frequent this site know that this is the one thing that really raises my hackles. Henceforth, I shall remain silent regarding the atrocities I witness - with one exception. It has to do with the shorthand of text messaging. Teeners have their own board on this site. If you want to type in "teener" language, please to it on your board. The rest of us who frequent this site are adults and we have tried very hard to properly learn the art of spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Please give us a break. If you want to post here, try to do it as an adult. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 [EDIT: a little harsh] "please to it on your board" now there is some irony for you . Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 "publically" ? perhaps PUBLICLY is the word we are looking for. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 Did i miss something? Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 I must have missed it too, to be honest. I just get a little tired of the soap boxing sometimes. Quote
edbassmaster Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 LOL...Yo Bizzle, did you ever see the movie Grumpy Old Men ;D Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 I watched it yesterday in fact! I love that movie. Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I don't understand? Rotflmao ;D C'mon Mike (Come on Mike) Lighten up man. I too get my panties in a bunch over this sometimes but it's more of a sorry feeling for the newer generation than something I think they are doing to annoy me. SOMEONE needs to wear the helmet soon, that always seems to lighten things up Quote
dave Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I've seen this debate go pages and pages and pages. Quote
Guest avid Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Sir Mike of the Long. Your grouchy tirades are a source of great wisdom. As you can see from the posts, you inspire the members to let the crayon cross the line. I, for one would be greatly disappointed if your occasional rant were no longer a part of this great forum. You are a funny guy. But I gotta tell you, the funniest thing in your post is........... The rest of us who frequent this site are adults and we have tried very hard to properly learn the art of spelling, capitalization and punctuation Stop it your killing me!!! Quote
frogtog Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Well I'm joining Old Mike! a lot of times their are a lot of short hand in the posts and I have no earthly idea what they mean. : If some one would post what the LOL and all that other short hand is I would appreciate it. I mean you are dealing with a guy who if you where still in the six grade and you were sixteen my dad would not waste any more money on education. You would have to drop out and go to work. ;D Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 The fact is the English language is always evolving and changing. Look at the first stories written in English by Chaucer. The stories have been TRANSLATED through the ages so they can be understood. Mind you they were originally written in ENGLISH. Anyone ever try to read original untranslated Shakespeare? It's impossible to read, yet it is in English and only 400 years old. It has nothing to do with laziness or people being uneducated, its just things change. Other cultures and pop culture are always influencing our language, especially music and the internet. And when one of the other big ways of communicating is the internet, it is a lot easier to type TTYL instead of talk to you later. Call it laziness or whatever you want to call it, but it is acctually progression. Quote
FishingBuds Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Yey(correct) come on Mr. LongMike I look forward to reaching a ripe old age that way I can have a "no reason clause" to chew out the youth. You need to face it we younger adults rely on you older adults to lay the foundation for us. If you stop now, all that work is wasted Or could you be showing us another level of lashing for us :-? Your GOOD! :note to self-if you can't convince them, confuse them. Lesson #34 from MR. LongMike (GrandMaster). Dang he's good Quote
Zel Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Mike does make some good points... I also would like to be able to understand what I'm reading. And if Teeners have their own board on this site, why not have a Crotchety Corner? Our tag line would be Don't trust anyone under 40. Glenn could open up a whole new band of advertisers Geritol, V i a g r a, Depends, and Russian Brides. Quote

Lack of capitalization,(at the beginning of a sentence and proper names) lack and misuse of punctuation(periods at the end of sentences), gross misspellings, I could go on and on, is not the English language evolving. Shortened words and phrases are understandable in the IM world where words cost money. In the real word we use real words and real phrases. I have 4 kids and 2 of them are teenagers. Believe me I see it everyday. I constantly am on them to write properly. Believe me, if you don't get into the habit of proper use of the language, it will affect you negatively in the long term. Trust me it is not "progress" Quote

Super User FishTank Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 I get where LongMike is coming from. I butcher the English language all the time. Eventhough I am not a teenager ;D, I can neither type nor spell worth a darn. As far as reading things that are written with the new text messaging language, it drivens me nuts but I deal with it. I guess I am slow to adapt. My wife though is a teacher and she brings home some scary homework from 7th and 8th graders. They will actually complete a test or an assignment only using the "Text Messaging Language". To me, this is a new era in lazziness. AA, 2MI. AISB. IAC, TNT. FishTank PS. My wife helped. She has ZOT. Call it laziness or whatever you want to call it, but it is acctually progression. In my opinion, I think the English Language is de-evolving. I read Shakespeare in Grade School not High School and yes, I did understand it, as did most of the kids I knew. How about the Hobbit (Lord of the Rings), I here High School kids say it is too hard to read. It was orginally written for 8-10 year olds. Another example is the newspapers, it is written at 3rd-4th grade level. What is sad, is that kids can learn this new way of speaking and communicating but are not capable of learning from the source language. How about looking a word up in the dictionary instead of using spell check? How about doing your homework, instead of copying from your friends? There will come a time, when these youngsters will enter the real world and find it much different. All the new language and education will not matter, if you don't know how to use it and apply it to what they do. Don't get me wrong, there are some extremely gifted children out there. As far as Chaucer goes he spoke French, as most people did in England in his day, and wrote in a Norman form of English (I was forced to read The Cantebarry Tales). His form of writing was new and not adapted. Here is something that was written by Robert Manning at about the same time and is much easier on the head than Chaucer. As thai haf writen and sayd, Haf I al in my Inglish layd In simple speche, as I couthe, That is lightest in mannes mouthe Have fun and learn. ;D Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 As for literature of this era.... previous generations will be known for Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, my generations' will be Harry Potter : Quote
