It always amazes me to hear how someone gets a rifle up to the third floor without bringing attention to oneself.

A very sad time for families during the upcoming holidays.

thoughts and prayers sent.

Its a crying shame that out of all the hundreds of people in that mall, none of them where legaly carrying a gun that could have been used to prevent several deaths.

Good grief. >:(

Good point Bucket but on the other hand is a shootout at the OK corral in the mall a good idea? The first guys is the problem but then a second guy shoots at him now a 3rd guy sees the commotion how does he know who to shoot at?

You do have an intriguing point though

From what I heard that he had an AK-47 (or similar type) rifle and he was wearing a big coat that could probably conseal it. It is just sad that such a terrible event happened so close to me. I was at that store just a few days ago, and I drive by it when go to school. It just seemed unreal when I drove by that Mall coming home from school tonight and it had all it Chirstmas lights on the building, and I knew that inside that building, a horrible shooting happened. I just couldn't believe it. Not here, not today.  I'm still just totally shocked.

Any time in warmer days some one wears an overly large coat into the hospital, our PBX operators will call one of us to come politely ask a vistor if they mind opening their dusters/trench coats up briefly.

We explain why.     Preventive measures to prevent future law suits.   We are not large hospital and full time security in the daytime is not feesible.

Sorry about the tYpo, I'm sure once you read the article, you got the gist of it.

You know due to Xmas shoppers, malls are gonna be holding lots of cash, and you would think added security would stop and ask people to open up jackets to be sure.

We no longer have to worry about terrorists in America, we have our own version going.    Its happening to often to say it isn't so.

Not much different in an suicide bomber and rogue shooter!!!

The news is reporting that his parents kicked him out of the house, he got busted for drugs, he lost his job and his girlfriend broke up with him. I guess he snapped.

Maybe, but I still wish he would have shot himself first.

Sad, Sad, Sad, what a permanent solution to a tempory problem. We had a young man come into our building several years ago rode the elevator to the 12th floor, walked out and jumped into the fountain 10 minutes before the lunch hour. i know there are some seriously ill individuals out there but there should be some kind of help.

With regards to why the shooter was not checked when entering the store while wearing a large coat was because here in Omaha yesterday the temp. was 20 degrees. Everyone was wearing a coat so I guess he "might" have been overlooked. Now granted there is no security officers that monitor that paticualr entrance that the shooter entered. I have heard that he rode the elevator (which is 10 feet from the entrance) to the third floor and started the assault. I'll bet that no one at the store even saw him until it was too late.

It is Christmas season and I'm sure the mall was packed. It is a terrible feeling to witness something like that during a time that supposed about giving and happiness.

I had a similar experience in 1995. I was working partime a retail store at Lafeyette Square Mall in Indianapolis when a teenage kid shot at another teenager for giving his girlfriend his phone number. He missed the kid but hit a shopper walking by. He got scared, put the gun away, and raised his hands to surrender. I am not sure how many people drew their guns next, because by that time I was hiding behind the cash register, but he was shot several times along with few other shoppers (I think six). Some of the shots came from mall police and others came from people just passing by while shopping. I'll never forget it. There were so many people shopping and there was just no place for them to go.

That mall has slowly turned into a war zone. I don't get, why the mall?

This store (Von Maur) is based in the area where I live. My wife actually worked there until about 3 years ago. It is pretty sad, the youngest girl killed was actually from here and she transferred to Omaha to be a manager. I just can't imagine the pain her parents must be feeling.

It makes me sick when I think about how many crazy people there are these days.

Here is a link to today's newspaper, pretty sad that such a young, productive live was taken.

this country needs to put more focus on mental health.

Yup, just saw another update on it. Left a note saying he wanted to be famous because he was a failure at everything. By failure...his parents kicked him out for getting fired from his job at McDonalds for stealing $16.00.  Just a sad world we live in.  :'(

Actually he was "kicked out of his house" some time ago - the getting fired from McDonalds happened the day of the incident, but he apparently had the AK 47 the evening before.  There are lots of stories floating around about this and details are being dispensed with an eye dropper.
