ok, so we're goin to BPS tomarrow. my dad needs a heavier spinning set-up for pike, and we were wondering if he could get good distance casting say 30# Power Pro with about 1oz. and up lures. i know ive heard of people use it for finese fishing with like 10# PP, but dont remember anyone saying anything about 30# PP. would this work, or should he go with something like Trilene Big Game? ive heard good things about that too. right now he has 8# Trilene XL Smooth Casting on a M power rod, just not enough to pull em' out of weeds. thanks for any advice.

It should work fine.  Make sure you have a rod heavy enough to cast those lures though.

I'm pretty sure Fish Chris throws swimbaits with heavy spinning gear and braid.

big game is not a good line for spinning.i casted 50/12 sufix on a mh spinning rod with no problem this year.30/8 sufix should work fine.if you get bite offs then use a leader.pike can bite through ANY line.

Personally, I don't like braid on a spinning outfit at all. I stick with relativley light line on a spinning outfit, and heavier on a baitcast set-up as a general rule.....

Personally, I use Suffix 30# braid on my spinning outfits.  I love it. no line twist at all.

I fish down in Florida with a spinning reel for saltwater fishing and have never had any problems. I use 30 power pro on a shimano stradic 4000 and have caught 20lb 40" snook and have no problems landing them. You just have to know how to work the fish.

I fish braid on a spinner all day.  For bass though.  Is pike a toothy fish?  Could the pike potentially pull a barracuda on you?  I defer to a northerner, or at least someone who knows.

Spinning tackle and PowerPro Braid (braided polyurethane) are Obscenely Compatible!

I own a couple dozen spinning outfits and all but two (ultra-light) are spooled with PowerPro.

For northern pike I use 30-lb PowerPro (one 50-lb outfit) with a short trace of 30-lb titanium wire leader (0.014" dia.).

I hesitate to use the word "perfect", but no other word comes to mind.

BTW: PowerPro casts 1/8 oz to 1 oz with ease, and line-twist is non-existent.

(Trilene Big Game is excellent line, but it's too wiry with spinning tackle...Avoid!)

Indeed they can!! I have had even small "hammer handle' pike bite me of when using 30lb braid. It never fails too, tie on the last jig or worm hook I brought with me for the day and it's sure to draw a vicous strike from some thing with teeth >;)

I use 30lb suffix braid on 2 of 3 spinning outfits I have.  Line twist was reduced to 0 after switching from flouro to braid.  I have only been broke off twice with the braid. One time due to drag not properly set and another to some serious rocks.

I think I use spinning gear much more than most folks here. I, personally, have NO ISSUES with using braid on spinning gear but I really don't think that will help your dad. A med power rod just isn't going to get it done. Wrong rod for what he's trying to do, adding braid won't fix the issue, however it will complete the answer when added to a MH,  H, or XH rod.

LBH, yep we knew he needed a heavier rod so he could pull em' out of weeds. we ended up getting 2 spinning combos, one a MH and one a M. the MH should work great for the pike and the M is to replace his other rod. i got quite a bit of lures, and we will probably be getting a Tracker 175TX, 2006 version on clearance! they will be calling us tomarrow to tell us what the payments ect. will be. ill post some pics of the gear i got later.
