tipptruck1 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Friday night it was a full moon. I step out side about 8pm the get some tabacco in me. I look up to see a ring around the moon. I don't mean a tiny ring I mean a big one. I was a clear night and I couldn't see any stars. All I saw was this white ring and the moon. I have never seen any thing like this before. I wish I could have gotten a pic of it. So has any one else seen this happen? Quote
mayassa Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 was it hazy out? Where your eyes tired, sometimes when I have been up a long time my eyes cant hold a focus and you get halos Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 You saw what's called a "Moon Dog." When there is the right amount of moisture in the atmosphere and the light reflecting off the moon is just right it produces a halo around the moon. Many times its a good precursor to rainy weather. Generally, the bigger the ring, the more rain you're likely to get. I'm betting it rained pretty good within the last 36 hours, but I know that more from watching the Steelers game last night http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/moonring/ This link gives a much more detailed and scientific explanation... Super User fishfordollars Posted November 27, 2007 Super User Posted November 27, 2007 Guess we learn something every day. I always heard it was caused from ice crystals in the atmosphere. Nice to know. Quote

YUP, Usually means snow is coming. I have seen this phenomena on many occasions, but here in Tennessee it rarely (never) means snow! Quote

Super User Hookemdown. Posted November 27, 2007 Super User Posted November 27, 2007 My uncle used to say that however many stars that was inside the ring was the number of days until it would rain. It's a awesome sight. Quote

slomoe Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Keep your eyes up and you'll see alot of cool stuff, shooting stars and whatnot. Just don't run into stuff. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted November 28, 2007 Author Posted November 28, 2007 I swear I saw a shooting star for the first time a few weeks ago. I can sit out side durning the summer with a fire some music and stare up at the night sky. And yes Iam sure it was tabacco. I asked my family to come out and look at it only my grandma has seen it before. Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 People spend too much time looking down and rarely take the time to just look up for a while. On any given night you can see plenty of shooting stars if you are patient enough to just sit and look up. On nights we'd be steaming out to the fishing grounds, I'd actually expect to see at least one shooting star. If you're at all interested in the "heavens", get a good pair of binoculars and just scan around. You'll be surprised at some of the stuff you'll see... Quote
