luckyinkentucky Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I'm going down to the Opry Mills Mall next weekend in Nashville, and my wife's excited to say the least. Her sister, a virtual know-it-all, said she doesn't shop in Tennessee because the sales tax is close to 9% at most retail stores. Of course the wife is concerned now that she 'found' this out! > Is she full of it? I really want to tell her to kiss off, but I don't know what the sales tax in Tennessee is, so I can't back it up with fact. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted November 26, 2007 Super User Posted November 26, 2007 Last time I was there around the Sevierville area it was 8.75%. That was 2 years ago. Quote
luckyinkentucky Posted November 26, 2007 Author Posted November 26, 2007 So if I go into a store and buy a shirt I'm gonna pay 9% tax on it??? I Might have to revamp my plans, and head for Indiana. Their tax is 6% like it is here in Kentucky. If I decided to buy a $200 rod at BPS I'd pay $18 in tax. :o Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted November 26, 2007 Super User Posted November 26, 2007 Some states have a high sales tax. Here in WV, it is 6% also. When I lived in New York it varied. No sales tax on clothing except shoes over $100.00. No sales tax on normal groceries like milk, cereal, vegetables, things like that. If it rang up to .79 cents, that's what you paid. You got crucified for buying beer, soda, and tobacco products though. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted November 26, 2007 Super User Posted November 26, 2007 No, It's 7%. http://www.taxadmin.org/FTA/rate/sales.html Quote
luckyinkentucky Posted November 26, 2007 Author Posted November 26, 2007 No, It's 7%. http://www.taxadmin.org/FTA/rate/sales.html I think it is 9.75% in Nashville. The problem lies when the state is a flat tax state. The state tax might be 7%, but each county can charge an additional tax on top of that! I think Nashville's tax is 2.5% to 2.75%. So, to sum it up in Nashville you will pay between 9.5% to 9.75%! :o I'm glad I don't live in a Flat Tax state! Quote
tipptruck1 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Makes me glad I live in Wisconsin. I belive its like 5.5% or 6% not sure. Quote
GeneinTX Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I used to travel to that area frequently. The sales tax was over 10% in 2005. There was a budget problem there for school districts and it shot up. I was floored one night in Clarksville when I got my billl in a bar and grill. Isn't here a Bass Pro in Clarkville, IN? Myself, I'd head there and bury the sisters body. Quote
Valascus Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Consider this though. The state of Tennessee is one of the few states in the U.S. that DOES NOT make it's citizens pay state taxes. It doesn't surprise me that the sales tax is a bit high. The state needs to make up that revenue somewhere. I would rather pay a bit higher sales tax and not have to pay state taxes than vice versa. Super User cart7t Posted November 26, 2007 Super User Posted November 26, 2007 Where have you been hiding Val? ;D Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 NH rules Many from RI, Mass.,VT and Maine go there to buy their cars, boats and other big $ items. Saves quite a chunk Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 26, 2007 Super User Posted November 26, 2007 Depends where you shop, there are also local taxes. In Memphis the total sales tax is 9.25%. Quote
