Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 I quit chewing Skoal (cold turkey) back in Feb. I had chewed everyday for about 22 yrs. and enjoyed it. Since quiting, I have gained about 10 pounds. The withdrawal headaches went away but I still crave it. I eat life savors and chewing gum as a substitute but the last week I found my mouth watering for chew. It seems harder to stay away now then it did when I first quit. I bought a bag of Levi thinking I could have a little to help curb the craving and not resort back to skoal. I'm on my 5th chaw of tobacco in the last 10 hrs. I'm extremely disapointed in myself for breaking down and giving in to temptation. I hope I can find the strength to walk away from this nasty sh** again. I wish I didn't enjoy it so much. Super User fourbizz Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 I have been at a can a day for the last 7 years. I once made it a week without a chew, that is the closest I have ever came to quitting. You made it 8 months, throw the pouch away. Sincerely, Other Big Puss Quote
TopDog Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Start over man, thats all you can do. Its in the past! Good luck bro, I fell your pain. I stopped smoking over 5 years ago..I still get a craving now and then. Quote
RWHusker. Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Bassin, I'm 47 and chewed for 18 years and have not had a chew for the past 16.5 yrs. The first year was one of the most difficult one of my life. I am so thankful to have it behind me. My best friend and roommate in college quit for 12 and restarted this year and is as addictied as ever. I tried all sorts of substitutes, Leaf, Cigars but always ended up back at Skoal. The patch helped my buddy quit. What finally did it for me was looking at a baby boy (who btw is now 16.5) and my wife asking if that Skoal was going to be part of the legacy I handed down to him? I wanted to smack her But in the end it was a good question. Good luck, go walk or exercise. Fishing/golfing/hunting does become fun again without chewing. (Sucks the 1st year). PM for encouragement. Super User Sam Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 Bassn Blvd, Man, did you do good or what? Fantastic run and now you can try to beat it by starting over. I don't chew or smoke but I love chocolates and Coke-a-Cola. But chocolate makes me crash and Cokes make me fat so it is very difficult to give them up. Of course, niether chocolates or Cokes cause mouth cancer, which is deadly. My wife's cousin had part of his tongue removed a few years ago due to mouth cancer and to say the least it is gross. So since we want to keep you around for a lot more years and get all of your fishing secrets and favorite baits you use we need you to continue your goal of giving up the chew. Good luck and we want you to know that we are all pulling for you. Quote
slomoe Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Like Sam said, Try to beat your record. Make it a goal. Its not so bad when you think of it as an accomplishment and not a craving. I haven't bought a pack of cigarettes in 8 months, but I never say that I quit, Just that I'm quiting. Addiction is a life long thing. Quote

It tastes kind of like a Coke with a hint of lime in it. It's kind of odd to hear you guys talking about "chewing" snuff. Around here we say "dipping" snuff and "chewing" tobacco. I guess I've discovered another "regional" term like "coke" and "pop". Bassn- Like many have said, just start over and realize that you were off the stuff for awhile. If you've been off that long, you can do it again. Soon, the "back on" times will get farther apart followed by never. Just hang in there!! Quote
Cory20 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Don't worry, you'll get back on track! Try to pay extra attention to the situations that make you want to chew and avoid the ones you can. Don't dwell on setbacks or obsess about chewing, consciously think about something else. Set realistic goals, like abstaining for a day, a week...etc. Use healthy tools available to you, like chewing sugarless gum, trying a patch, exercising and eating right. Enjoy the flavors you missed. Quitting forever is a big pill to swallow. One day and one cast at a time, right? Cory-ex a lot of unhealthy decisions Quote

Super User Gatorbassman Posted November 10, 2007 Super User Posted November 10, 2007 I wish I could legally share the pictures I have of the many face and mouth cancer patients I have seen. I have seen one that had the entire left side of his face from hair line to chin removed and replaced with a flap of skin that was taken from his butt. The flap covered where his left eye and nose used to be. He died a few days later. He dipped for 28yrs. I knew one guy who was fed through a tube for the last 5 years of his life. Eventually the cancer came back and that was all his body could handle. He died when he was 33 years old. If you would like to get a life insurance policy now just let me know. I'll hook you up. Quit now!!!!!!!! The alternative ain't worth it. Quote
Guest muddy Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 I smoke and do not chew, but i am growing fearful I can't take the meds for smoke cessation, because of their anit depressant nature, and i got a huge allergic reaction to the patch. What are some of the alternatives. I would love to hug my daughter without her saying "You smell like an ashtray" Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 10, 2007 Author Super User Posted November 10, 2007 You guys/gals are great. I've never met any of you but all of the support yall have given me makes me feel as though we have been buds for years. I don't want to see the disapointment in my wife's eyes when she finds out I started back and I refuse to sneak around her so I'm going to QUIT all over again. I don't want to be another statistic like Fluke pointed out, especially since my son is due to be born in March. Thank you for all of the support and advice, Bassn_Blvd. Quote
