Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Many of you know that I was formerly a US Ski team member (Freestyle-Moguls A) After being injured just weeks before leaving for the Olympics, I went into a cocoon. I caouldn't watch skiing, hear about it, see pics, etc. I spent many an hour on the psych couch. Well, I think I'm ready again. This yr I am finding myself getting a VERY heavy urge to strap the boards back on again. I have gone maybe 3 times in the last 10 yrs and each time had repercussions mentally. Physically and talent wise, it's all still there but mentally,...it's been tough. I worked with the NE PVA (paralyzed Vets) this fall on a tournament for the guys. There, I met a great guy named Bill Decoteau. Bill referred me to the NE PVA site where I noticed they have a skiing program. I just signed up as a volunteer to work with the sled type skiers and also with the kids who have physical limitations. I'm getting very excited to bring this passion back into my life. I may not be around as much this winter because of it but I think you'll all be fine with that, knowing where I am and what I'm doing. Looks like I found my "off-season" therapy Quote
Bassboy15 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 SWEET! I love to ski, what events did you do? Quote
Super User 5bass Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 That sounds like a great idea. It had to be hard staying away for that long when it meant that much to you and your life and I'm sure the kids that you'll be helping out will be happy to have you around. Looks to be a win-win situation for both sides. Quote
Super User Tin Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 Russ, if you want to get back into it I think we might need to take a trip up to Jay Peak, good ole back woods skiing with bumps Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 SWEET! I love to ski, what events did you do? I competed in the "Moguls A" division but I'm not sure what these guys do, I would imagine slalom, giant slalom and downhill. It's all new to me, as I learn about the program, I'll be reporting back That sounds like a great idea. It had to be hard staying away for that long when it meant that much to you and your life and I'm sure the kids that you'll be helping out will be happy to have you around. Looks to be a win-win situation for both sides. Working at UPS helped. My parents had 2 house fires (yes,...2) in which I lost 85-90% of all the memorabilia from videos to old uniforms to pics of all the countries, etc. When this happened, I was relieved. Can you believe that?? Relieved that I didn't have to see all those "reminders" around me. Now,.....It makes me want to cry that the stuff is gone. Russ, if you want to get back into it I think we might need to take a trip up to Jay Peak, good ole back woods skiing with bumps I'll meet you in "octopus' garden" Not sure where it is? Follow me and stay close Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 lmao. whiteface is pretty nice too. and lake placid is a fun place in the winter. definatley need to take a weekend trip. Whiteface- First east coast training camp (now it's at Killington I believe) I got to test an aerial ramp at WF. It's an artificial grass ramp that lands you in a pool. More fun than an amusement park. I have been talking with your dad about a few night trips to Wachussett also. Quote
Guest muddy Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 THAT IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS A TRAINING CENTER AT THE FORMER OLYMPIC SITE AT LAKE PLACID NY ALSO,GOOD LUCK < STAY SAFE. Oh and about all those free lessons you give the ladies in your quarters :o Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 Muddy, Whiteface is part of all that,...same camp They say to NEVER try to teach a g/f to ski, send them out with an instructor if you want her to learn. It can break up a relationship, lol. I had no issues there,...Michelle can unzip a bump line better than many of my guy friends! Then I broke up with her,....what an idiot, lol. Someone needs to cuff me in the head please.... Quote

Zel Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Over 40 years old moguls you better check out those knees first man! Want to talk about ski withdrawals I was once a part-time ski instructor (beginners only). Five years ago I bought my house at the base of Blue Mountain Ski Area thinking a quick trip every night would be a lot of fun (hate weekends at the resorts). While moving into the house I got rear ended by a van. Going to the doctor for the pain, they discovered I had a nasty childhood accident which reared its ugly head (a large bone spur in the neck which extends 3/4 into my spinal cord), They told me I need to get a nasty operation, or give up just about everything that could cause a potential neck injury. Chose the sedentary lifestyle instead of surgery, which also meant giving up skiing. Now I sigh as I watch the hundreds of cars pass my house in the cold months. (And now I've started hating the skiers LOL I have my mailbox taken out and lawn damaged an average of twice a winter on icy nights by those swooshers. Not a single one has ever stopped. Try putting in a mailbox post in frozen ground not fun!) :-[ Quote
Olebiker Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I say we give it until about February 15 and we will be reading about Russ' arthroscopic surgery to repair his ACL. Way back when I was living in a less temperate region I suffered greatly from seasonal affective disorder. January through March was just awful. I took up skiing in the mid 1990s at, of all places, Paoli Peaks, Indiana. Skiing gave me something to look forward to and get me through the worst of the dark months. I live in Florida now and gave up skiing years ago, but I still look forward to the new Warren Miller movie each year. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 Zen, I'm only 40 on paper I think if I lived at the mountain,...I wouldn't be able to resist eventually. Quote
