Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted October 24, 2006 Super User Posted October 24, 2006 I just heard something today that was pretty interesting in regards to Rogers: He is the only player whose hat is completely "blacked" out under the brim. If you watch some replays, he strokes the brim of his hat, then takes his hands to his mouth (to warm them up), then the pitch. Kind of interesting. Personally I don't think pine tar is "cheating". If hitters get to use it .... why not pitchers??? It would take a bunch of pine tar (much more than was on his hand) and some time to pack it in the seams ...... that would be cheating. Quote

Allow me to respectfully disagree with you here KU. Using ANY foreign substance to scuff, apply too, smear on , or doctor the ball is definately cheating. It doesn't take much pine tar or any other substance on a baseball to make it have some "funny" movement. The batters that faced Rogers in the first inning all said that the ball was doing some funny stuff out there. A little schmear of pine tar on a ball would effect the balls rotation in a way that would give it some pretty filthy (no pun intended) movement giving the pitcher a marked advantage over a hitter. Hitters use pine tar to keep a good grip on a bat in wet or humid weather. The hitters using pine tar isn't giving them any type of advantage over the pitcher. Just helps them grip the bat better. Valascus Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 But anyway folks...enough about this whole instance. I am with senile here. Lets talk about this game 3. Gonna be a good 'un I think. Carp is a monster at home. 1.70 ERA at Busch Stadium. That is a nasty number. But on the flip side of that number is the fact that the Cardinals haven't been able to muster jack for offense against left handed pitchers all season. They need to change that tonight against Robertson if they wanna chance to win this game. If they can give Carp a few runs then they have a great chance. Carp has a gameplan on how to pitch the Tigers, and he has some pitches in his arsenal that will make him very effective at it...namely that cut fastball. It allows him to jam right handed hitters inside making sure they don't get full extension and whack one outta the park...heck out of the infield even. On lefties, most of them think it starts off too far inside then it cuts back in over the inner corner for a strike as they raise their arms to get out of the way of a pitch they think is coming at 'em. If he has that pitch working tonight in conjunction with that nasty 12 to 6 hammer curve you can kiss any Tiger offense good bye...ain't gonna happen. If the Tigers are gonna get Carp...they better do it early before he establishes that breaking pitch. The offense will have a look at another lefty tonight. But there is a huge difference between Robertson and Rogers. Rogers will finesse you to death getting you to swing at stuff outta the zone. Robertson is a power pitcher that tries to blow you away. I think if there is a lefty the Cards can break through against Robertson is that guy. There are a lot of good fastball hitters in our line up, and as long as they remain patient and force Robertson to throw pitches and work counts then not only will they wear him down...they will get more quality pitches to hit. Game 3 coming up in about an hour and a half...gonna be great. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 2-1, We are on our way. Go UNDERDOGS woohoo. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Hey I was right!!!! The Cards did find out about Rogers from watching the dugout/clubhoue TVS Lets hope they can bury them tommorw into a 3-1 hole Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 25, 2006 Super User Posted October 25, 2006 I"m with you Muddy_man. I hope it doesn't get rained out. Missouri is having heavy rains the next couple of days. Quote
Valascus Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Let's see it get rained out and Detroit try and throw Rogers out on the mound in St.L in game 5. ;D But in all seriousness, I hope it doesn't get rained out. I think even if it does get rained out it doesn't change much for the Cards. They will probably still march Sup out for Game 4 seeing as right now I don't see any better option. I don't think it would really change much for Detroit either. What are they going to do, march out Verlander ,who got pounded, instead of Bonderman. I would stick with Bonderman, who I don't believe the Cards have seen at all this year, I think :-?. Leyland definately needs to shake up his line up though. No one is getting on in front of their real threats of Ordonez or Guillen, and no one is giving Guillen anything to hit because the hitters behind him haven't done very much. If it does rain, if nothing else, it keeps La Russa from having to trot anyone out there on short rest. The rain would allow Detroit to get to Rogers (pine tar aside) earlier, but he has not pitched away from home this whole post season. Rogers pitching at Busch would be a WHOLE different scenario I think. I don't think you would see the scoreless innings last much longer if that happens. If I had to predict this series...I would say...Cardinals in as early as 6, but I think 7 is more likely again. Why? I have a hard time believing the Tigers are done. The long layover may be hurting them, but eventually they are gonna come back to life. I just think it's gonna be too late for 'em. Quote
GAMEOVER Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I still believe Detroit will win it, Cards won two games and Tigers well one. Leyland though will get these players on track fast. Dont forget we played the Cards in a 3 games series this year and swept them easyly. Tigers are lacking momentum right now that one week break hurt them. Rogers deffinatly needs to pitch more then two games for us though if were going to win. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 25, 2006 Super User Posted October 25, 2006 The Cardinals were swept easily but one three game series tells you nothing. I mean the Royals swept the Tigers in the last series of the regular schedule. Does anyone think the Royals are a better team than the Tigers? It's a long season and at this level of competition, any team can beat any other team at a certain point in the season. I'm just hoping that at this point, the Cardinals have the upper hand. They were definitely due to get hot, considering the injuries and the poor play since the All-Star break. We'll see. The top two slots in the Cardinals order haven't been getting on which has made it more difficult for Pujols to get anything to hit. Last night Eckstein and Wilson turned it around so I hope this is a turning point in this situation. Fortunately, so far, the middle and latter batters in the Cardinals order have been able to produce enough RBIs to make up for the upper part of the order. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I missed the game last night and it sounds like a good one. Its not raining here right now so hopefully it will be Game on tonight. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Hey How does Weaver pitch in cold weather? Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Hey How does Weaver pitch in cold weather? Good when he was playing the Mets. (Yep, I went there) Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Its been raining all afternoon since my last "its not raining post" so I bet the game will be cancelled Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 25, 2006 Super User Posted October 25, 2006 I hope we play, but the weather is not good. A win tonight would really put the presure on Detroit. BTW Carpenter was about as good as it gets last night. Great Card win!!! PLAY BALL. 8-) Quote
Valascus Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 MLB is saying game on for tonight. Granted the game may not start until 9:15...but game on nonetheless. If the Cards take this one Detroit is in serious serious trouble. Hopefully Sup is the Sup we saw in Game 7 in the NLCS. Can't wait! Quote
RiskKid. Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Some fun comments from Derek Jeter (love the ones about the pine tar): Even though the Yankees (97-65) matched the crosstown New York Mets for the best regular-season record in baseball this year, Jeter doesn't take much satisfaction from the season. On Tuesday, Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado said he thought the Mets were the NL's best team. "They don't give a trophy saying: 'Well, you know, you thought you had the best team, so you win,'" Jeter said. "It doesn't make a difference what you think about your team. The bottom line is who performs." While Jeter heard about the controversy over what was on Kenny Rogers' hand in Game 2 of the World Series, he said there was no discussion of any foreign substance during Rogers' playoff start against the Yankees. "I don't think that really had anything to do with it," Jeter said. "Bottom line, you can take a pine tar rag and put it behind the mound if you want, you've still got to throw the ball over the plate." Rogers, who hasn't allowed a run in the postseason, appeared to have a mark -- although lighter -- on his hand during his start against New York. When told about the pictures, Jeter smiled. "So you just send Detroit home and we can come play tomorrow, right?" he joked. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 26, 2006 Super User Posted October 26, 2006 The way the weather looks here in St. Louis, and in Detroit, we may not get the Series finished before Thanksgiving. I think under the circumstances we should call it done and give the Cards the trophy. Just thinking... Quote
